Sunday 9/11/11
Trail Conditions: Amazing the difference a month made in the 19MB trail post-Irene. Sections of the first 0.3 mi or so have become a 2-3 foot deep gully strewn with rocks and tree roots - not the easy footing that made this a great starter hike for kids, although you can still navigate around the tough spots. Thank you trail adopters or whomever for restoring the 2nd bridge across the stream in 19MB; fully half of it was washed away and someone strung 2 planks across the stream to make it crossable. Some running water on much the stretch of 19MB up from the Carter-Moriah Trail junction up toward the hut, though very manageable. Wildcat Ridge Trail from height of land up to Wildcat A summit was surprisingly dry. Someone said the access trail to the hut remained flooded and there was a walkaround to get there, but we didn't try it.
Special Equipment Required: Poles.
Comments: Optional - Thank you FOT48 team on Wildcat A for setting up the flag before we arrived, and esp. for the US Marine who flew it, folded it lovingly, and talked about his service in Iraq , friends who joined because of 9-11 who were killed. I was proud to commemorate the day this you - and to be part of a community of likeminded hikers who help the mountains show their respect.
Great day and very much enjoyed the company of Steve of Maine on the long slog back to the car.
