Wildcat A via Nineteen Mile Brook, Wildcat Ridge Trail

Date of Hike: Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Trail Conditions: Frozen granular, powder

Special Equipment Required: Crampons

Comments:

Nineteen Mile Brook Trail to Wildcat Ridge Trail junction - barebootable (I wore Microspikes). No blowdowns. About half the creek crossings are open, all easily done.

Wildcat Ridge Trail - 1-8" of powder (from drifting) on top of frozen granular. As a result, Microspikes are useless. Footbed is way too narrow for snowshoes. Crampons a must right now.

About 5 minutes or so above the slide crossing, there is a decent sized tree with a white blaze. Though the trail technically continues straight (as does most of the visible foot traffic), go left! Going straight will soon go beyond the normal turn of the trail (there are some prints going partway up the turn, but the rest of the traverse to the earlier mentioned left turn tracks is not broken out) and lead you up to the top of the ridge and into spruce trap heaven.
