trails: nineteen mile brook trail, wildcat ridge trail, ski trails
conditions: some crusty snow and ice right from the start on nineteen mile. some larger bits of ice up high. a nice layer of sleet/snow on the wildcat ridge trail covered most of the ice and made for good walking in microspikes. the crossing of the a peak slide was not icy and pretty inconsequential with current conditions. on the descent from c peak there were flows in the expected sections that weren't too problematic today, but with a good freeze may be more difficult and more aggressive traction could be in order. the ski trails were a mix of ice, snow and bare ground. the one now unbridged crossing on nineteen mile wasn't a problem today. we removed a few significant blowdowns, but some large ones remain on the ascent of a peak from the notch with one cluster that obscures the trail.
we had no issues with the folks at wildcat and though prepared to pay if necessary were not approached about purchasing a ticket though signs at the base indicate that is the policy. i'm betting we slipped through today and this will change once the upper mountain and the polecat trail are open so be prepared.
equipment: with todays conditions microspikes were perfect, but crampons a good idea to have along if things change.
comments: what started out as a cloudy and dreary day turned beautiful by afternoon with great views to the clearing presidentials from d peak. noted some nice brushing done from c peak towards d peak which is greatly appreciated. nice blowdown removal done along the route as well, but still more to tackle. thanks to mark, val and cynthia for a good hike.
