I was saddened to hear of this incident as I read it last night. The whole rationing part obiviously spells disaster on anyone's part. The guides who were in charge of him should have recognized the problem before it got worse, and let it sip, sometimes in these instances you have to go against the grain and save a person's life.
 
A very sad story. I have to agree with SAR that this is no "survival course", it is a marketing ploy for bragging rights. The lack of guide intervention or medical attention is disturbing. As for the comment on Marines, during the Crucible those boys are mediaclly monitored and admonished for not hydrating. The focus there is not on suffering, but on teamwork and mental toughness. Lastly, I never knew being thirsty was not a sissy trait.
