date: 2/14/13
trails: fr 59, skylight pond trail, long trail
conditions: fr 59 in good condition and sanded the first mile then just plowed another .25 or so where there is limited space to park while not blocking a driveway on the left. watch out for xc skiers who seem to have the right of way this time of year and were bombing across the road without looking for cars. the 2+ mile road walk was well packed by snowmobiles and skis. i can mostly defer to the post bombadil put up yesterday as conditions were much the same and i was able to further break out and pack down the trails. i also continued from the high point to the next bump with the viewpoint so that is now broken out as well. the long trail is quite grown in at times and blazing pretty minimal. i noted that many blazes had been "removed". by removed i mean painted over with a brown paint. many of these blazes would be quite useful this time of year. the first relatively small water crossing was snow/ice bridged and the second larger one has a good wooden foot bridge.
equipment: i wore snowshoes the whole hike.
comments: the second time was the charm on this one. i considered another attempt via clark brook, but when i heard from pat (bombadil) that he had beat out the skylight pond route this approach become much more appealing. a big thanks to pat for his great work route finding and trail breaking. the forecasted sun didn't materialize until i was back down to the road. i was soaked by the time i got to wilson given the warmer temps and wet snow on the trees. great to be out.
