The current Yankee Magazine (Nov/Dec 2009) has Windblown in it. Saddly its in the "House for Sale" section. Also there is and article about the ice storm last year. It has a wonderful picture of Monadnock and Dublin Lake.

But they will be OPEN this year, and it looks like the non-profit option is still possible.

Audrey was a little faster than me...

I camped here this past June (with prior permission and fee paid) and ice storm damage was still evident. Its a very nice place with some excellent views.

Possible future?

There is a project underway to acquire and expand it. The project is now in the fundraising stage. We (Central New England Nordic Council) are the only group that has expressed interest in WB as a ski center, the alternative is development or a trophy property. See

A little off topic but what are the chances of Windblown (if bought for commercial use) put in summer use trails like mt bike trails?

I live close to Forks Area Trail System (FATS) in SC which has close to 40 miles of singletrack and on weekends there are between 200-400 riders on the trails. I can easily see Windblown doing that for summer use and turning around and using the trails for snowshoeing.

edit: this is one of the main reasons Augusta, GA will place host to the 2010 IMBA World Summit

I haven't been to Windblown since the early 80s (and long before I was a mountain biker)... but I can vouch for the net-positive impact developing mountain biking trails has had on the Kingdom Trails in East Burke, VT. We were there last month, and were uniformly impressed with the riding -- it was spectacular -- but also with what a thriving little scene has grown up there. There is a really great vibe, and they are successfully pulling in several hundred riders a day on weekends.

get out there this year

This is an ambitious project, and I hope that you can put together the needed funds. I'm excited that Windblown could remain a ski area and open space. I'm less excited about stadium building, snowmaking installation, and trail closures for racing (mainly in the network between the main lodge and the swimming pond and up side hill slide). And I think that the proposed biathlon range is just plain bad. The plans are a big boost for the racing community but aren't an expansion for the non-racing skier - rather a reduction in trail access much of the time, funneling public along stagecoach to access the rest of the network. The plus for the public would be the chance to ski on the snowmaking loop when natural snow is low and it is not closed for racing. The snowmaking is necessary to be a viable event venue with solid footing, but its high energy consumption does not help with global warming...

From reading the plans, I would like to see more recognition that these plans reduce the public access to a good chunk of the network during the myriad envisioned events, and that this development changes the character of the area that many have come to love. One tangible thing that could be done is to create more trails that connect the base lodge to the rest of the network that can remain open during races, offsetting to some degree the restricted public access. You can find some space for this by scrapping the biathlon range (with its backstop abutting stagecoach, a public ski trail?!?). Gunshots on the Windblown property would also completely destroy the peace and quiet that normally reign in that place. I was happy to read of your hope to acquire some adjacent parcels in the future, which could be a boost for the non-racing public.

But still, far preferable to the likely alternatives. Good luck!

Central New England Nordic Council

The core of CENNC is a group of very active cross country ski racers. So, it's understandable that they are interested in better facilities for racing. Will it ever happen? Gotta buy the property first, and that's a big challenge.

Windblown is the closest real cross country ski area to the Boston area. I think that everyone agrees that it would be a shame to loose it.

Al and Irene

While I have not read the Yankee article and have never skied at Windblown..(sadly I am a downhill skier) it saddens me to hear of pending sale. I had the pleasure of spending a night at Galehead Hut a couple of years ago with Al and Irene, just the three of us and a couple of hut folks toward closing weekend in October... Real nice people and they spoke of their place with reverence and were some kind of proud of their home business.. We had a great evening and breakfast and hiked a bit on the way out...Not enough of those types of places and people any more..Good luck to them..
