Hopefully, you are learning as you go here. :D

I usually do not put on a lot of layers to start. I know I'm going to warm up. If for some reason I don't, I can always put more layers on. You want to avoid sweating a lot if you can. Dry clothes are a good thing on a winter hike.

A wise man once said to dress for the conditions that will exist 5 minutes from now. Especially good advice when you approach an exposed area. Don't wait until you are out on a ridge, with the wind howling, to stop and change clothes, or add layers!

BTW, if you decide not to join us 1/1, please email me directly.

Being an all year bike commuter here in NJ, I know that when I dress up in the mornings before sunrise, I always know that if I'm not a bit cold to start, I overdressed. Same thing applies for winter dayhiking, expect to be a little chilly in the beginning, it's better to be a little chilly than really warm, because then you'll overheat quickly. Don't be afraid though to stop and delayer before you start sweating too much. If you are drenched with sweat, the minute you hit the summit and stop hiking, you'll get cold, real fast. Sometimes it's unavoidable but if you dress in layers and stop often to change, it is completely normal to do so and it's safer that way. It's also a good way to remember to hydrate in winter. Because you sweat less, sometimes the mind has a tendency to not drink, but you still should keep drinking. Stopping often to delayer or add one helps a bit with hydration. At least in my experience.

Have fun!
