Winn Mountain (1,686') - Lyndeborough, NH

Joslin Road route to/from summit: 3.1 miles

Nothing of note to report regarding trail conditions; it was simply a perfect, summer day with temps in the low 70s, sun without a cloud in the sky.

By request of my fast-growing young teenaged son, we headed out for a relatively basic hike. Didn't want to drive too far, so we stayed real local and took on Winn Mountain, in the town next-door to us. Relatively sparse info on the trailhead and the trail itself, but we easily found our way to the start, and headed up. No markings to be found on the trail, but as it turns out, you simply follow Joslin Road beyond the gate, all the way to the top.

Encountered just three other parties along the way - passed two women, one of whom it turns out left a cane an old man made for her, down on the trail. We had found the cane lying down in the trail and stood it up against a tree. We had the summit to ourselves most of the hour we were up there. A woman and her dog came up through the brush to the summit after bush-whacking from her home (cool), and we passed a few people with their dog just after we started our way down.

Great little mountain, with sweeping views to the west and north. It was cool to see North Pack Monadnock, the northern terminus of the Wapack Range, extend out to the southwest to Pack Monadnock, to Temple Mountain and beyond. Grand Monadnock was also easily seen in the distance, as was Pinnacle (which I hiked with the kids a couple years ago) and the Lyndeborough and Rose mountain peaks (which Elliot and Noelle and I hiked with the scouts last year). We did catch of glimpse of the Uncanoonucs on our way down as well. Elliot and I did north this past winter and will likely do south very soon.

We just might come back soon to take in the wealth of wild blueberries growing nearing the summit!
