Tin Mountain Conservation Center Adult Nature Course

Join naturalist Rick Van de Poll in the Tin Mountain Conservation Center Adult Nature Course “Where the Winter Wild Things Are” for an exciting weekend introduction to mammal tracking and sign. The course starts with an evening in the classroom on Friday, February 8th from 6:30 through 9 PM where basic terminology of tracking and field identification of sign, including a look at pelts, mounts, plaster casts, skulls are covered. On Saturday, February 9th from 9 AM through 4 PM time will be spent sleuthing through the forest, fields and ponds of Bald Hill in search of resident animals. Special emphasis will be on habitat and behavior. Back-tracking exercises will clarify habits and haunts of encountered animals. Bring a lunch, hand lens, warm clothes, and snowshoes (or borrow ours). Active animals on the Bald Hill grounds include beaver, moose, deer, red and gray fox, snowshoe hare, mink, and bobcat. The course is open to the public and will be held at the Tin Mountain Nature Learning Center, 1245 Bald Hill Road, Albany, NH. The cost for the course is $50 for members and $65 for non-members. Dr. Rick Van de Poll is the principal of Ecosystem Management Consultants (EMC) of Sandwich, New Hampshire. Since 1988, EMC has conducted bio-inventories and land management plans on over 100,000 acres of land for the public and private sector in New England. Dr. Van De Poll is a certified wetland scientist, and is Chairman of the NH Joint Board of Natural Scientists. He has taught various wetland courses at Antioch New England Graduate School, where he was a full-time faculty member for 15 years, and at Plymouth State University, where he is currently an adjunct faculty member. He is a charter member of the NH Association of Wetland Scientists, and was on the Board for 6 years as Education & Research Committee Chair and Vice-President. He currently sits as the NH Association of Conservation Commission representative on the Aquatic Resource Mitigation Fund Site Selection Committee.
