WMNF Forest Roads Are Closing

This week's rain has softened up the roads. Here's the updated list of closures. After the end of NH rifle deer season on Sunday, December 4, you can expect more closures.

Regardless of what the road closures site says, Sawyer River Road is gated, though the loggers apparently have the keys. Funny how a road can handle logging trucks but not private vehicles.

I hope I had known this on Friday.

Drove to the Saywer River Road saturday morning, found the road gated. After some thinking, gave up 14 miles round trip to Mt. carrigain. Drove back to Franconia Notch, did that classic laffayatte/Lincoln loop. Late start, but a great hike!

When does the ravine lodge road close?

The road is never plowed, Ravine Lodge itself closes down much earlier in the fall. Last I knew the road was open but you drive at your own risk. My guess is that they'll close the gate soon.

Hi folks,

I locked the gate on Friday Dec 8. It will be locked until the Lodge opens for business in the spring, around May 12 or so. It's 1.7 miles from the gate to the Lodge and associated trailheads.

I'll be unlocking the gate on the Carriage Road at Camp Misery Bridge sometime this week (it's open in the winter to allow access to snowmobilers up to the turnaround below South Peak). In the past I have had a few "lock wars" both with people cutting the lock to open the gate and other people cutting the lock to close the gate (and lock it with their own lock). What was that about "you can't please all the people all the time"?

ETA: By the same token, if you notice snowmobile tracks above the turnaround it would be great to know that as well.
