Katahdin is indeed from the Abenaki-Penobscot language, meaning "greatest mountain" or "mightiest mountain". Although the culture who gave it this name was the Penobscot, they did speak essentially the same language as the Abenaki residing farther west.
It's a shame that even the State of Maine labels signs "Mount Katahdin". But now you know better!
