This is my favorite hike in the Whites, and since I'm moving to the DC area in less than two months (dear god), I needed to get up to Zeacliff before I left. I brought along 3 guys who have never hiked in or near the Pemi before. Boy they sure were surprised by the views. All of them proclaimed it was the best hike that had ever done, which makes me feel good. I like it when people experience, understand and appreciate the natural beauty of the White Mtns. Anyways, onto the trip report.

The day didn't start out so great. I checked the radar before I left, and there was a batch of showers and downpours headed straight for the Whites, so I knew we would all get wet. I was hoping it would clear out by the time we made it to the hut. Luck was even better than anticipated, as the rain stopped as soon as we made it to the funky bridge on the Zealand trail, and the sun immediately came out. I find that to be a rare occurrence in the Whites. The clouds usually hang tough.

Spring has definitely sprung in the white mountains, but the further into the Zealand trail we went, the smaller the leaves got. I've never hiked this section of trail in May before, and the grasses along the beaver ponds hadn't grown too tall, so there were several small views I had never seen before. At some point, I need to try the trail in winter.

Before too long, we made it to the hut. This hike was my first major white mountain hike since last October, so saying that I was a bit rusty is an understatement. After walking the nice and flat Zealand trail, I tackled the final steep push up to the hut with colors changing in my eyes, and my entire upper body started hurting. It was like a slap in the face! I was probably pushing myself too much. I'm never been that good at taking my time when trying to go up a steep climb. As usual, the views from the hut more than made up for it.

After a nice leisurely 35 min break, we tackled the final 1.3 miles to the Zeacliff outlook. At first, I was very bleary eyed, and physically drained. But as usual, I wasn't mentally tired, so that helped to keep me going. Spring is just starting to take hold above 3000 feet, as the leaves got smaller and smaller, until, just before we transitioned to all spruce and fir, there were no leaves on the birches at all. Like usual, I got a major 2nd wind when I saw the forest transitioning. I knew we were almost there. Just one more major steep section, and then the top!

This is about the 5th time I've hiked to the outlook. I'm always impressed with the views, and my hiking buddies were blown away. I don't think they talked for a few minutes. They just stared out into the Pemi in awe.

We spent a good long time hanging out up there, and then a few gray jays noticed our presence, and our food. I'm usually not a fan of feeding these things, but I wanted to show my hiking buddies what these birds do. So that made for several photo ops.

I like this one

Paat' 2 Zeaclidd Pond, some snow, and the way back

Some hikers told us that there was some isolated deep snow near Zeacliff Pond. Since its only about a 0.5 mile walk, we headed over there. I could feel the temps starting to drop since the cold front had just moved through, but it was just warm enough to be comfy in shorts and a tshirt.

Leftover snow!

Looks like someone postholed about 2+ feet into it too! Despite my 270+ pound frame, I didn't sink through.

Zeacliff pond looks lower every time I come to visit it, but its always beautiful.

The view to Carrigain makes this pond special

Now it was time to head back to the hut. Skies really were beginning to clear out, so I took one more jog down to the outlook, where I met several people who had just hiked from Galehead hut. One guy said that it was snowing up on South Twin earlier in the day!

much better!

We made good time on the way down, and the sun angle was helping to make some rather decent photo ops, especially on the way out from the hut.

We arrived at the car around 7:30pm, which was about 8 hours after we started. It was GREAT to be back in the heart of the whites again, and I hope to get up there a couple more time before July. Happy Memorial day to all!

Lovely photos and trip report. WHAT?!? You've moving to DC? I surly hope that you'll go back to the Whites, I always enjoy your trip reports!

Great hike, and make sure you get the rest of your hiking in before you move!

Nice! I love the Zeacliff Trail -- although there is a fairly tall headwall near the top that's tough for a shorty like me to scale! Your pictures are AWESOME!!! Have you ever visited Zeacliff Pond?? Its very beautiful and feels so remote.
I will echo the earlier sentiments that your TR's and photography will be missed!

I hope that you have the opportunity to do a few more hikes before you leave on your really big "trek" to the DC area. But if not, you sure picked one of the best hikes in the Whites for a farewell journey. And it was fantastic that you shared this experience with some friends.

As others have said . . . your photography is wonderful. Hopefully, we can all look forward to some reports that you might ocassionally file from your new location. Or even better yet, some reports that you'll file when you journey back to the Whites for vacation, or whatever!

Best of luck to you on your new adventure!

Nice photos and trip report. Good luck in DC. Although you might not be hiking here as much please keep us posted on the weather...in DC and The Whites

Good luck Grouseking!

Good luck in DC! I'm sure being in DC is no reason to stop you from lurking and posting on VFTT. I will miss your photography of the Whites. Looking forward to some postings on the sights and natural wonders you'll find in your new environment.

Nice pics, took bad you didn't take them out past Shoal towards Stillwater, then they could have really seen the Pemi! Yeah Zeacliff is still my favorite view in the Whites.

Thanks for posting the pictures; reminds me that I need to head out there sometime again, sooner, rather than later.

Sorry about the move to DC. :(

While it's not the Whites, you'll find plenty of hiking near DC (as you probably already know. Having grown up near DC and having spent another 15 years there after college, I know the area pretty well, although every time I head down there for business it seems to have changed quite a bit.).

If it's any consolation, the flight from BWI to Manchester is only an hour.

Heh, I don't think I'll ever stop posting on Views....

Thank you everyone for you kind words. It is def the biggest move of my life. I hope I can find a way to get used to hiking in the god awful humidity...oh and to get used to no snow. That is going to be the biggest thing to get over.

I hope to do a few more hikes before heading down to DC, and I want to get one done that I haven't hiked yet. Perhaps Jefferson, or Moriah.
