Trails: Zealand Trail, Twinway, Zeacliff Trail, Ethan Pond Trail, Zealand Trail
Date of Hike: 05-29-2011
Water Crossing Notes: Crossing past Zealand hut no problem, Crossing on Zeacliff Trail in ravine however was high enough that we had to take off our boot and wade, though not dangerous (mid calf deep at worst)
Bugs: Blackflies out, DEET on
Comments: Looked like T storm were a real possibility so picked this hike for varied scenery without being stuck on an exposed ridge too long, and a bit of redlining. Clouds cleared slowly while on the great outlook that is Zeacliff. Took the very steep and rough Zeacliff Trail down, no blowdowns, lots of moose activity, but took time and care with water, mud, mossy rock, and one 6 foot rock ledge with only one crack for foothold might be rough for a small child (saw several headed up!).
AWESOME viewpoint on Zeacliff trail just before rejoining Ethan Pond trail in a talus field, rhodora blooming, views up 1000 foot cliffs of Whitewall Mountain, valley to Carrigian, back to Zeacliff and hut--a real wild feel.
