trails: zealand trail, twinway, zealand spur

conditions: zealand road open and in good shape. zealand trail mostly free of snow and ice with short stretches of ice that were generally inconsequential. first ice flows were on the twinway below the hut and could be gotten around pretty easily. more frequent stretches of ice on the way to zeacliff with probably the most impressive flow of the day shortly below the cliffs. continued stretches of ice and snow to the summit of zealand. today with warm temps it was soft enough to provide pretty easy going with care, but when things freeze again sections could be quite tricky. water crossings were all standard rock hops.

equipment: we wore microspikes from the hut to the summit and back. some of the icy sections may test light traction when they freeze hard again.

comments: a good day to pick up zealand after missing it on a hike last december. pretty windy and soggy up on the ridge, but more pleasant on the way down. quite warm today. expect upper trails to be an icy mess until we get some snow to cover it all up. thanks to mark and cynthia for a nice hike.
