We left from the nearly empty Zealand trailhead at the crack of dawn. The trails from start to finish were in good condition and basically clear of blowdowns except for a few in the Pemi wilderness.
The stream crossings on Zealand trail were either bridged or easily done. The two crossings above the hut a bit higher than usual but still easily done. The bottom two crossings on the Bondcliff trail could be rock hopped with a bit of figuring.
The temps were in the upper 40s at the trailhead and dropped to 34 up on top--just warm enough that my hydration pack didn't freeze. I guess it's about time to put it away for the season.
There was rime ice on the trees above 4500' but no ice on the ground except what came off the trees. No need for special traction.
All day long you could hear the roar of the wind which was ferocious above the treeline. It was a bad as I've ever encountered on the ridge between Bond and Bondcliff. It took much longer than usual to traverse the ridge but we made it. Once back in the shelter of the trees the rest of the trip was uneventful.
