Spectacular views from the Zeacliff overlook and a few peeking thru the trees on the way up to the viewless Zealand summit. Zealand Rd. was fine, Twinway from hut to Zeacliff overlook had running water on the trail and plenty of mud, Twinway from Zeacliff Trail junction to summit had lots of mud, and some rotting logs that were barely enough to keep you out of the mini-ponds. Thanks to the trail adopters, though, for a bunch of new planks across the bogs.
Today's "you meet all types" lesson: on the downhill trek we ran into 4 families all trekking to the Zealand Hut. One lady asked me if she was on the right trail about 6 times in the one-hour walk down from the Zeacliff Trail junction to the hut. When I explained that a good way to figure this out was to look at the white blazes on the trees, she said "I know" with a dirty look and proceeded to ask me at least 3 more times. She also mentioned at the start that she was going to call down to the hut to tell them she was late and I mentioned that I didn't think huts had phones. Apparently this was a revelation. - She arrived at the hut to big congratulations of her yuppie friends who marveled at her getting there. Yeah.
Equipment: poles for downhill, if you like them; bug juice after about 6 pm;
sense of humor with neophytes; sense of wonder at the mountains and what they teach to those who are ready to learn.
