Trails: Unmapped fire warden trail on Mt. Hale, Zealand, Ethan Pond and Shoal Pond
Conditions: Tried to skin up Mt. Hale on Thursday 2/28 but warm day and soft snow made for lousy turns so we gave up and skied up to the hut. Colder temps and new snow on Thurs. and Fri. nights improved conditions, although there was some mild breakable crust underneath the top coating. Lots of blow downs on Shoal Pond Trail and Ethan Pond Trail. We broke trail almost down to Stillwater Jct. and on parts of Ethan Pond out to the shelter. Really deep snow pack, maybe 4-5 ft., so it's easy to get lost on unbroken stuff. Lots of eye-level branches and other traps for the unwary. You know what equipment to bring.
