4+ inches of new snow Friday afternoon improved trails greatly...was breakable crust before that. No one had been down Shoal Pond Trail or Ethan Pond Trail from the hut to the shelter since before the last snow/rain/snow event. We broke out Shoal Pond trail about halfway to Stillwater, but turned around. Trail will beat you up: wild amounts of snow cover, tree branches at face height, blazes at shin height or less, bushwhacks when snow obliterated the trail entirely. Same thing more or less on Ethan Pond trail. We had fun. New snow was a dream to ski, but sun will soften it up and freeze it again until next snow. Road was skiable all the way out Sunday, even the last mile, but who knows how long that will last.
Zealand Trail, parts of the Twinway and Lend-a-Hand up to summit of Hale looked well-packed. Going anywhere else in the Pemi without skis or snowshoes is probably madness.
