Thanks MichaelJ! I agree, its one of my faves now that I've done them all. Whenever do it again, or for anyone whoever asks, it would be the pick.

North and South Twins, Galehead and A Close Encounter with a Moose

Wowee! Glad you guys are OK, as you say, could have been much worse. Have you guys been up since Sat/Sun? I'm pretty sure I heard from Steve that I missed bumping into you guys at the Wanderer. We have been drivin all over some of the major Moose Alleys- Rt 2, 3, 115, 116, 302, & 110, haven't...

Irene -- Please use this thread for NH/VT/ME road closures

I will answer my own question. Found out today that since there is plenty of parking near the trailhead for Unknown Pond, which is located right before the 2nd bridge, there is no need for concern as it is not necessary to approach the 3rd bridge, whose stability was somewhat in question.

    The Great Trailmakers Experiment

At the conclusion of today's hike, I have reached the summit of Cabot by all trails possible, both legal and otherwise. I cannot say that I have done that with many peaks, and I'm not sure why. As if I were a true instinctive creature of habit, I quite often return to trails I know. I am open to...

Cabot via Unknown Pond Trail and KRT

Trail was very muddy down low, and then spotty wetness up to the Bulge. Had rain, then sleet, then snow atop Cabot. Then it got sunny on the return leg, so we hit the Horn, and the views were fine. Removed 3 blowdowns on ascent approach to Cabot, sorry to say time prevented me from getting the...

    The Nose Knows

Every season in NH excites the senses. I often think of the choral rhapsody each spring as the peepers burst into song, or how the rush of winter feels against the cheek, wind burnt and frosty, even summer, with its long hours, enticing my eyes to stay open as long as possible to capture every...

Irene -- Please use this thread for NH/VT/ME road closures

Has anybody done Cabot from the north, gaining access via Mill Brook Road (FR11)? . I read on the State's website that it is unsafe for travel, but have heard rumors it is passable.

    Moriah via Carter-Moriah Trail

Lower half of trail, prior to Mt Surprise has some running water, but volume is small, and would likely be gone soon if it wasn't going to rain as they say Tuesday. Upper half of trail, after Mt Surprise, actually is quite wet, with a fair amount of standing water. Bog bridges do not look...

    Liberty/Flume Traverse

Mohamed, I hope that I can safely assume the Osseo is in good condition? I know the lower half is in good shape because it got worked on shortly after the storms rolled through. We are heading up soon to focus on the upper half (above the Downlook).

Good Rainy Day NH 4k'er Hike?

I second MichaelJ, as soon as I read the thread, its the first peak that came to mind. The col between Starr King and Waumbek is enticing on a rainy, misty, cool grey day. (at least I would rather it be cool than temperate or humid)

Yes, There is Hiking on Martha's Vineyard

Yea, if you take a membership with the Trustees Org, you can save a lot when it comes to accessing the properties. We did do kayaking at Cape Poge, and I do believe that upon our return, in addition to hiking, we plan on a lot more kayaking. Mad Martha's has some of the best ice cream, and the...

Yes, There is Hiking on Martha's Vineyard

We don't like to vacation anywhere that lacks elevation gain. This year our annual August-Septrember NH trip was forsaken to spend a week with my wife's family on Martha's Vineyard, celebrating her folks' 40th anniversary (we return to NH in October thank goodness). Our first hike was Menemsha...

Wamsutta is heck of a trip. No matter where it is done during your day, its a doozie comin' down.

    Osseo Trail

My speculation is along similiar grounds, I reason perhaps different wood and different, if not inferior treatment. Here is a picture of what we believe was a section of the narrow gauge track. Last year FJ was doing some exploring and was pretty confident that the staging area was found. As a...

    Osseo Trail

When FJ told me about this, it's an incredible find, considering this was the only narrow gauge logging railroad in the Whites. Great find! Anybody (DougPaul) have any idea why these ties decayed, or seem to have decayed, as opposed to others in the area, notably Lincoln Woods trail?

Maybe we'll see ya then. We're up to work in October and I've got some other trails in the Franconia South Region to patrol for the AMC Adopter program. Thinking of one of the days carrying up all the equipment via Flume Slide to work the upper half of Osseo just to say I did it.

History of the Martha's Mile Trail

Yea, it was a good safety measure, it just couldn't keep you out of one was determined. You could easily climb up the legs by means of the the supports until you got to the remainder of the ladder. I remember the lookout itself was stripped out, but in the center was this "island", like a table...

History of the Martha's Mile Trail

It was pretty awesome as a kid, we watched it from the intersection of Ingerson Rd and Rt 2, right where Starr King cemetery is, where my great uncle is buried. I remember seeing the poof, and a split second later the sound arrived.
