    Request for Maine Info

I recommend the Sugarloaf area......several opportunities for day hikes or overnighters on a few 4k footers, including Avery, West (on the Bigelow range), the Crockers, Sugarloaf and Redington as well as several lower elevation mountains, such as Little Bigelow, Burnt Hill, Cranberry peak and...

    Do we want more snow?

What an awesome winter .......over 200 inches at Sugarloaf so far and if this April is anything like last April (100 inches), we could be close to or at 300 inches, so bring it on !! There are absolutely no signs of spring yet.....weather last weekend was single digits and very windy (90 + mph...

Another missing hiker FOUND in Franconia Notch

He was also quoted as saying he would respect whatever decision is made regarding the charge. What is there about some outdoor activities that turns the brains of otherwise smart people (this guy was a law school student) into mush? I notice this in skiing a lot too....smart people just do...

new memorial plaque on Mount Clay

Thanks for filling that blank.......I admit I didn't do that level of research.

new memorial plaque on Mount Clay

It's odd isn't it ? Nobody in this community has heard of her and you'd think that someone with a strong enough connection to the mountains that their friends and family would go through the time, expense and effort to get it there, would have some mention of them in their obituary. The obituary...

    Hurricane this weekend?

Bagged it today....the high summits forecast posted about 30 minutes ago had 50-70 mph winds and wind chills about 20 above zero, plus rain or mixed precip. I don't mind that weather if it happens after I hit the trail, but when I know in advance it's coming and I have to drive a three hours to...

    Illegal Ski Trail Cut ...

You hit the nail on the head.....IMO, at least. I hardly ever see anything ski-related posted in here. In addition, there are a couple of very active backcountry ski-specific forums that get a lot of action. I attended the show in Arlington.....very well organized and the movie was some of the...

    Ski Goggles

Yeah, you're right because I used to notice that the fogging or not fogging would happen or not happen with different clothes i.e neck gaiters. What a pain in the ass. Also, once I got fogged, I found it almost impossible to clear them without skiing back down to the base lodge and letting...

    Ski Goggles

Dave is right on the money with this one ! I've tried almost every brand and model of OTG goggles and none of them work well. The secret (I'm told ) is to make sure the glasses and goggle lenses are at the same temp. This means putting on your goggles in the base lodge and never taking them off...

    Hiking Tecumseh with a dog

I've hiked Tecumseh with my Lab a couple of times and she had no problems and plenty of energy at the end. As I'm typing this I don't recall a lot of water along the trail, except the pool at the beginning. I always pack a foldable bowl and extra water and treats when I hike with my dog to avoid...

Missing hiker with possible bad intent

This story is getting more bizarre.....it'll be interesting to see what happens : Search for missing hiker suspended CONCORD, N.H. - Fish and Game has suspended its search for a Maine man in the rugged wilderness near Mount Washington as police look into whether a suicide note he left might...

    Balancing careers and the outdoors.

I've struggled with this same issue on many occasions and came to the same decision you did. I own a place at Sugarloaf and still get to ski 50 to 60 days a year. I hike all I want and go sea kayaking, mountain biking and road cycling right out of my house on the North Shore of Boston. I could...

Difficult Peaks in the NH 48

This site has some pretty good info for someone planning an attack on the NH 48. It ranks easiest and hardest and gives some distance and time data that might be good for planning : http://home.earthlink.net/~ellozy/index.html

Bean sees theme park on horizon

Great idea.....the thought of preserving Freeport left the barn about 25 years ago. If it helps the economy...go for it !!

Avery & Fire Wardens Trail Conditions? - Maine

I haven't been up the Fire Warden's trail specifically this year, but I've been skiing at Sugarloaf every weekend and they got 55 inches of snow two weeks ago and about 100 inches total in April....I think it's a very good bet there's still a lot of snow up there. Having done the Firewarden /...

    Snow Amounts update please?

Yes, they are. Today, they announced that the season will be extended to 4/29 ! Of course there will be plenty of hiking to ski well into May or even early June !! :D

    Snow Amounts update please?

Sugarloaf is getting absolutely hammered..........about 50 inches since Friday !!! I've seen reports that they need snowcats to clear some of the roads and they're having trouble keeping chairlift loading/unloading areas cleared out because they've laid off all the seasonal help. This weekend...
