    Group of Fisher Cats

It could very well have been otter. They were all close to the same size, and otter was the first thing that came to mind when I saw them. They were pretty far away from any water though.

    Group of Fisher Cats

Has anyone every seen fisher cats traveling together? I was walking in the woods in Ashburnham, MA this morning. 4 animals crossed the trail behind me. They stopped, looked at me, and then split into two groups as they ran away. I looked at some animal ID guides and did an online search. They...

    Boot Inserts - Worthwhile?

I had custom inserts made for a pair of ski boots. Almost immediately I became a better skiier, and a happier one too. They were expensive but I was able to go with a lower end boot that fit me better. I have tried inserts in hiking boots, running shoes, trail shoes, and work boots. They...

    snowpants

I've been using a low end EMS softshell (I think they are called Terra) that have performed great in everything from 36 degree rain to knee deep snow. The ski, snowshoe, climb, and sit well. The REI mistrals looked similar, but I got the better deal on the ems pants. I believe I just saw the...

    Work or Hike

I agree that getting paid to do what you love is a great deal. Just remember that leading hikes is not even close to the same experience you will have when you are on a hike alone or with your friends. Your goal is to give the participants the best time possible. Your desires no longer count...

    Peakbagging Vermont

The Long Trail Guide published by the Green Mountain Club is the best resourse I have found. All five 4ks are in there, as well as some of the NEHH. The maps are not what you find for the White's, but they are adequate if you have good eyes or a magnifying glass. The route descriptions are good.

North Imp Trail-North Carter Trail - Water sources

I hiked that route last weekend. There was running water on the Imp trail, but I didn't see anymore until we came down the Carter Dome Trail.

    Presi Traverse 6/22 or 6/23

I'm hoping to do a one day presi traverse this spring as well. What is a reasonable amount of time to expect to spend on the trail? I am a reasonably fast hiker, and I rarely stop for breaks longer than 15 minutes (although I usually don't day hike the presis). Any other hints? Sean

Did/Is anyone saving one 4000'er for last?

Middle Carter will be my final 4000er. I did not choose to save it and would have finished on Garfield this past weekend, but a blister (not mine) cancelled the carter trip early. The best laid plans... I am looking forward to finishing soon, not to actually finish, but I am developing a new...

    Weather be darned!

I hiked Garfield yesterday. Normally I would have cancelled the trip, but I was jonesing for a hike. Wet and muddy trails, slushy snow the last two miles, and rain the whole way. Why am I still grinning today?

    REI Quarter Dome

One of my friends has a quarter dome. It has a lot of features that I really like, and he raves about it. It's a really good deal, price vs. features.

    Hydration Bladder Question

I think you're right about the benefits of the hydration bladder. Since I have started using one I have noticed an increase in my pace, stamina, and recovery time. Because of this, I can hike longer and see more when I get out. I once forgot to empty my bladder. Cleaning it was difficult. I...

    REI Half Dome 2 Tent

I have a slightly older model. I love it and it is the only tent I take backpacking. The first time I used it, my hiking partner and I got stuck in a snowstorm. Both of us are 6'+. With both of us eating and sleeping in the tent I expected it to frost over, but it didn't. It is slightly...

    Gale River Trail Question

I hiked the trail at about this time several years ago. The road was closed, but I don't remember it being an unpleasant walk. The river crossings were tough, but I made it through without falling in (unusual for me). There was not sa much rain that season as we have had recently, so I would...

    recommended head lamp?

I have a Petzl Myo 3 that I am very happy with. It has three LEDs that are great for cooking, reading, and hiking. It also has a brighter bulb that works well for skiing and biking.

    REI Half Dome 2 Footprint

I find that my footprint sticks out slightly from the edges of the tent, but only a couple of inches. This is easily covered by the rain fly, so I haven't had any problems with water pooling. I do need to reseam the fly, as it has developed this wonderful drip right over my forehear.

How much snow did you get?

We have about 4" and counting in Southern New Hampshire. I was going to go skiing but am running out of time to finish a project at work. Silly job thing!

    Winter Pants-- advice

I hiked in bibs once. Ooopps. Too hot and difficult to vent, so now I just use them skiing. I bought a pair of schoeller pants this year and absolutly love them. My bibs cost around $200 and the schoeller pants were &90 on sale at ems. I've used them hiking and cross country skiing. They...

    supplaments?

I think that most supplements are at best good ways to make expensive urine, and at worst, dangerous to you health. I doubt the potassium and salt tablets will hurt you, but you can get the same effects through the food that you eat. I usually bring some sort of salted nuts or trail mix...
