    scat id help, please

Bear scat size, shape and composition vary a lot because their diets vary a lot. Most bear scat that I have seen doesn't look like that either, it's usually in big black piles. Black bears are the only animal I can think of that would have scat that large with that content. Additionally, when...

Fewer Americans are visiting national parks. Administrators ask why

TOTALLY agree! Our society is so disconnected from the natural environment it makes me want to barf. Schools teach microbiology and genetics but students can't name the tree outside the window. Dirt = germs, strangers in the woods, overstressed and overworked. These days parents work so...

Here's a less radical alternative to closing trails... ... yes those are fences...

Who here is afraid of mud?

Coming out of Mahoosuc Notch heading North up Mahoosuc Arm (?) the trail is AWFUL. It's really steep and most places are 5-10 wide bare rock. You can see where people skirt the edges of the trail to hang on to roots and trees. The soil along the edges is thin and pretty much every step knocks...

Everest: Beyond the Limit. Discussion Note ***WITH SPOILERS***

I watched the first week's episode out of the corner of my eye while doing other things. I read the linked article above a couple of days ago and then watched the second episode last night. I'll probably keep watching it, but... My question is, are Brice and his guides going to climb with...

    Snowshoeing goes Mainstream

Snowshoe conga lines in the whites? I've seen em... Please! Most everyone on here who goes out in the winter is probably part of the great snowshoe trend. That is, unless you sport the old school wood and rawhide.

Who here is afraid of mud?

At first glance this seems like a dumb question. But this is one of those few things that just really irks me when I'm out in the woods. No, it's not the mud that irks me. It's all those people with their $100+ gortex, waterproof/breathable ankle high boots with giators that won't walk...

    Anybody used these waders?

I don't know about the waders, but Wiggy's does seem to make interesting stuff. HOWEVER, as I noticed you said you were looking at their sleep systems, my parents gave me a Wiggy's Superlight 0 bag about 5 years ago for Christmas. I hated it. The weight was decent and the physical...

    Long Lake Paddle

I started a trip there last summer and then continued down the Raquette. We put in at the boat ramp where 30 crosses the lake and then paddled and sailed to the end. If I recall we got a late start, the sailing was pretty slow but we were enjoying the day, and we made it to camp at a decent...

Everest: Beyond the Limit. Starts 11/14 on Discovery Channel

The Discovery Channel is awesome right now! They have "Survival Fridays" too, with "Man vs. Wild" and "I Shouldn't Be Alive". Watched both last night and they are pretty cool.

    MSR WhisperLite Tips?

Sorry, I totally disagree with this. Before purchasing my WhisperLite I used a homemade alcohol stove all the time. I took it on many winter trips, and at times it was the only stove out of 5 or 6 different types that would light (at temps below zero). The other stoves are a different story...

    warm fuzzies and other sign

Both of the tracks were found together, definately the same animal made both. The more elongated one is the hind foot, and the one that really looks like bobcat is the front. I should have measured the stride but didn't. A wolf biologist told me the tracks were coyote, but I'm not sure I agree.

    warm fuzzies and other sign

Got a couple things I need help IDing First are two tufts of hair I found on the ground today. They are very soft, not coarse at all and were found about 10 feet apart along a trail that is frequented by wolves, coyote and deer. I'm thinking rabbit. Thoughts? And then there are these...

    scat id help, please

My guess is bear, based on the size and content. This field guide is my favorite. It has scat, track and other sign information for most animals, including birds, in North America.

    MSR WhisperLite Tips?

I recently started using a flint to start my WL. My thought was that I could get good enough at lighting a fire that I would no longer need to carry a lighter or matches (yeah right  ). But I will say the flint works well for lighting my stove. I was taught to never light a store...

Hiking/Biking suggestions for Tucson, AZ area

B&G, please post a trip report when you get back. I will be travelling to Tuscon 6 to 8 times in the next year and half for school and am hoping to do some hiking while there. I look forward to hearing and seeing what there is to do.

How to clean a moose skull?

Pop the teeth out, there's tissue under them that will stink later. Label which came from top/lower jaw and right or left. Soak the skull in peroxide as mentioned about and then super glue the teeth back in.

    Funny Questions

I was on my way back from a dayhike in the whites last spring and had stopped at a gas station to fill up and get a coffee. I was pumping gas when an Indian man pulled up and began pumping gas as well. He proceeded to ask another man (in very broken English) how much further it was to 95. To...

    Developing Naturalist Skills

There are good field guides, better field guides and lots of personal preferences. This is hands down my favorite field guide. It's so much more than just animal tracks. I also really like the Stokes field guides, they read more like a book and have good stories to go along with each thing...
