    Garmin eTrex 22x -- Questions

I have a bit of update on the maps for my Garmin eTrex 32x - last night I updated to the latest TopoActive map version 2020.10 but this map did not yet have the lakes that I marked on OpenStreetMap, so I went to OSM Wiki page for Garmin downloadable maps (...

    Garmin eTrex 22x -- Questions

I suspect my issue is a bit different in that once I connected the device to a different USB port it worked fine once. What I discovered was that after I plugged in my GPS to a USB port that I used before it would start up, show menus and then said it was saving tracks and waypoints to a gpx...

    Garmin eTrex 22x -- Questions

I recently bought eTrex 32x to replace my old eTrex 30. eTrex 32x is a essentially 22x + 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter & includes ANT+ connectivity. I think TopoActive maps are primarily based on OpenStreetMap data. My unit came with a map from last year and I am now upgrading it to...

    Sunrise Hike up Mt. Jefferson

Great photos. I really love the 4th one where the Sun is hidden behind the clouds.

Zoleo: a new competitor to Spot and Garmen

I have had Spot3 for several years now, so over time I got some idea of what to look for in a satellite communication device. I think the things I care about fall primarily into these categories: communication features tracking reliability size batteries cost of the plan cost of the device ease...

    Hiker Death on Garfield

My cousin who is a medical professional once told me: "there are no people who are in perfect health, there are only those who have not been examined thoroughly enough."

    Kayak Car Roof Rack Question

I have a CrossTrek and also a Thule roof rack. I bought cheaper (square) cross bars and got 2 pairs of generic J-shaped kayak carriers for something under $60 off Amazon. I have driven with two double kayaks locally in Adirondacks without a problem.

    9 Circles of Hiker Hell

When it comes to passing other people on the trail I think the more delicate situation is when a slightly faster hiker catches up to someone else who is a bit slower ascending a narrow trail. Then it is really all about courtesy of the person (or a group of people) up front.

    9 Circles of Hiker Hell

Honestly, I prefer to yield to people going downhill as it gives me a chance to catch a breath without having to admit that I really need it!

    More trail closings?

Can anyone imagine that a person who wants to stay for the night at a hotel in New Hampshire asserts that they did not self quarantine if that's what is required to get a room?

The Virus, Tourism and Risk in the North Country

As I travel to different places around U.S. (and other countries too) I always wonder what people in these places do for living. About a month ago I was pondering on a related question - how big a chunk of New Hampshire economy is driven by tourism. I suspect that my view of New Hampshire is...

Fun hiking project during 2 months of Coronavirus - Monadnock red line

Since you posted this, I was a little curious if all trails are really shown on this map, so I took a look at OSM-based map: https://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/#?map=16!42.8518!-72.1121 and a bit to my surprise I discovered that the map now shows many stone walls. I guess the LIDAR-based data...

AMC Huts closed for the duration of 2020!

I would be much more concerned about lack of restroom access. I doubt many day hikers carry their own trowels.

    More trail closings?

    More trail closings?

If an executive order cannot describe something precisely enough that it would not need to use a word "appropriate" (as in "appropriate personal protective equipment") I doubt it can withstand any real challenge in court.

Hiking is less fun in the internet age

For me a GPS was actually an enabler rather than degrader in my hiking experience. A while back I did not have any friends who were bushwhacking, so I always stuck to trails. Then I got into geocaching, bought myself a hiking GPS and I went for a number of geocaches that required some degree...

Hiking is less fun in the internet age

Thanks for the link - maybe I will ask my wife to get it for me next time she is out of gift ideas! :) And yes, I really enjoy birding & bird photography. Every once in a while I get a nice picture like this Carolina wren I spotted last weekend: Perhaps birding is not for everyone as it...

Hiking is less fun in the internet age

Have you ever tried birding? It goes well with hiking and can be practiced in your backyard too. Perhaps all birds appear alike at first but they are really different. The best way to get started? Watch a comedy The Big Year - I found it really enjoyable, although I have already started birding...

Where to go - US protected Lands Map

Nice! I spot checked a couple of places in New Jersey and they are showing up. I just wish that one could zoom in more with protected lands layer still visible.
