Man on Cell Phone Falls off Mt. Whitney Trail

CA just passed a law banning texting while driving. People complain about too many laws, but some people are obviously too clueless to realize what a bad idea this is. Apparently in NYC, there has been an epidemic of people being hit by cars while texting and walking out into the street against...

    canister stoves at 10-11k ft & <25 deg F

I've used a SnowPeak canister at 7800 ft. at about 20F and it worked fine. Also, a Coleman Xtreme cartridge should work as well, if not better-it is a liquid feed style propane/butane mix cartridge that lays on its side. I've used one of those too under similar conditions. I take an Optimus...

    Dynamic Range (I think)

Adams' most famous work was done with a large view camera, often an 8X10. He did not just blast away with a roll film camera and hope for the best. One of his most famous, Moonrise Over Hernandez, New Mexico was a single exposure. My knowledge of photography precedes the digital age, but as far...

    Hikers Stranded

A post after that one was pretty funny too- something to the effect of "well, we'd better get on this before we actually learn what happened and it spoils it for the rest of us."

    Hikers Stranded

I think they are a bit worse, but I'm a relative newcomer here. :D My favorite quote from that thread on CC- "everybody please remember that it is important to slag these people for poor judgment before we get information as to what really happened. knowing the facts will just confuse us and...

    Boot durability questions

I have an old pair of Asolo Trail II S boots, mid 1980's, all leather with a Pirelli sole on them and a pair of Asolo Fusion GTX boots with a proprietary Asolo sole. The old ones held up well over a lot of miles (couple of hundred, I think) and rough terrain in part with no slipping that I...

"No Shortcuts to the Top" by Ed Viesturs

You sure did; I went back and read it. I must have missed that thread somehow or most likely forgotten about it. :o I read another outdoor book a while back that had the same problem. The story was really compelling, but the sequencing problems were irritating. I know Dave Roberts has...

    Primus Ignition steel

Hi, The REI ones are about 3 inches or so long and burn quite a while. They stink too, so use them downwind of your tent. Must be the coating. Make sure they go all the way out, just like a sparkler. I've stuck them in snow and they still burn.

"No Shortcuts to the Top" by Ed Viesturs

I read this a while back. The problem I found with it was he jumped around chronologically from chapter to chapter and so it was hard sometimes to keep track of where he was and who he was with in any kind of order. Other than that, it was pretty interesting.

    Primus Ignition steel

My 80's vintage XGK had the little sparkler gadget, but it didn't work all that well. It finally broke after not all that much use and MSR sent me a small bolt to take its place (along with some other stuff to rebuild it) for free, no less. I have a couple of cheap butane lighters, but what...

    Solo Tent for Tall Person

Henry's tents (Tarptent) are all over 90" long. Depending on what you want it for, he should have something to fit you. He doesn't make a winter tent, though. Henry is very good about answering questions and he posts occasionally on The Lightweight Backpacker (www.backpacking.net) answering...

    Resole Hiking Boots?

Here's a short list I found on the net. No first-hand experience, but several people on Telemark Tips recommended Dave Page when someone asked about resoling a pair of tele boots (which have similar soles to hiking boots). http://www.hikingbootsguide.com/hiking-boot-repair.html

    Go Uphill to Be Rescued

I found this interesting little animation that shows the sun's position at any time on any date in the different hemispheres. http://www.sciences.univ-nantes.fr/physique/perso/gtulloue/Sun/motion/Day_night_a.html#haut

Climber dies on Summit of Denali

I learned basic climbing from a couple of Kiwis back in the 80's and doubt seriously that they had a better sense of themselves or life and death or whatever that study claims than anyone else. They were great guys, good climbers and good teachers, but this sounds like academic rubbish to me...

    light backpack suggestions

There are many lightweight packs. I have an old Kelty which is no longer made, so can't recommend that one. I have tried on a number of Granite Gear packs and they get high marks from long-time users. Same for GoLite and Gregory. There are some ultralight packs, but they have weight limits due...

    Our Mistakes?

I have a few-none too serious though: Test fired my XGK on my kitchen counter top after rebuilding it and not checking to see that the pump wasn't leaking-I was prepared to put out a fire, so no real damage when the pump erupted in flames; Waded across a river without trekking poles and wound...

Sick after 3-day backpacking trip - coincidence?

Food poisoning has already been suggested and I agree with the earlier poster. I had a similar experience a couple of years ago on a trip to Yosemite. I figured out it may have been food poisoning from some fish I ate at a local restaurant before heading into the park. Your symptoms sound a lot...

    Darren's father passed away

Darren, my best wishes to you and your family. I went through this myself recently, so I know how difficult it can be. Take care and I hope we will see you back here soon.

    Two hiker rescues yesterday

I have one of those yellow Katydin water bottles with the filter in it. I haven't really used it yet, but it should be a good alternative to either using tablets, or doing nothing for treating stream water.

    Saw this little guy.

I have had this same problem on and off depending on the website-in this case, I can see these pics just fine. If anyone knows what causes this, I would love to know. I think it may have to do with Java and Internet Explorer settings, but I am not sure.
