    Fatality on Moosilauke 3/14-3/15

Very sad. Haven’t done a ton of winter hiking in the Whites, but two of my trips have struck home this week. Finally started reading “The Last Traverse,” which follows a Franconia Ridge loop attempt that so many of us have done in the heart of winter. And now this exact agenda I completed a...

    Maple Syrup

Plus one on Barred Woods. Picked up a couple of quarts of Grade A Amber at the end of a hike when I was up that way last week. Absolutely top notch stuff. Super friendly couple who even came me an impromptu tour of their facility. Have some Maple Sugar Candy from Barred Woods that should be...

Dalton Mtn NH - Landowner Request

Private property issues out west as well. Culebra for example ... https://www.aspentimes.com/sports/colorados-culebra-the-only-private-14er-in-the-country/ Only list I ever tackled where private property concerns were a real thing was the US State Highpoints, several of which are on private...

Dalton Mtn NH - Landowner Request

I always find it interesting how aggressively the hiking/outdoors community is willing to defend the property rights of people who think they own mountains. Legally speaking, there is no more low grade victimless “crime” than leaving footprints on the sides of hills when no one else is there to...

Any NE p2k finishers out there?

Super satisfying day on Cold Hollow Mountain today to close out Vermont. Since my last P2K post, I also closed out New Hampshire, leaving me with just seven P2K peaks in Maine. First summit of Cold Hollow Mountain since snowflea and her companion signed through on December 11th. Enough of...

    Northern Vermont Hike Advice

I second the recommendation for the Worcester Range, which lies across the valley east of Mansfield. Did Putnam last year and Mount Hunger awhile back. Have not done the traverse. Stowe Pinnacle is a very popular spot with views west to Mount Mansfield. Very worthy area. East Mountain is an...

    Redlining racist?

So ironically/non-ironically, I spent my day today ski touring on the Mount Ascutney summit road ... a mountain whose names traces back to the Abenakis. It SEEMS that based on my contributions to this thread thus far that you have placed me in a box which opposes historical recognition of...

    Redlining racist?

Only racists climb Mount Washington or go to that state or that city. The evidence is overwhelming. Also, the “Presidential Range.” Don’t even get me started. And what’s up with the big push to get Tecumseh taken off the 48 list???

    Redlining racist?

Neither the activity of hiking all of the trails in a given mountain range nor the offending definition that is the basis of this thread even rates in the top 6 on “Urban Dictionary,” which as we all know is the decider of all things. Just goes to show how myopia increasingly tempers our views...

    Trailless peaks in the Catskills

True dat. Finding the canister on SW Hunter in the late 90s was a treasure hunt. Took me three tries from multiple directions before I finally found it. Prior to attempt #3, I told my future wife ... “I’m not coming down until I find it.” Had already finished all the rest and still consider...

    Peak Bragging 2020!

Nothing spectacular. Finished up my last five Vermont county highpoints and banged out a bunch of new Northeast 2000 foot prominence peaks. Highlights of the year were probably twin trips to Baxter State Park. During the first trip, I repeated my original Abol slide climb of Katahdin from...

    Catskill 3500 Club New List

^^^^^ This is easy. Hunter and Slide ... my first two Catskill 3500 peaks that I initially hiked on back-to-back days way back in February 1995 during my Northeast 111er days. Was most recently atop Hunter in the summer of 2019 with my then 10-year-old daughter. :D

    Alpine Touring at Waterville Valley

Thanks jfb! Lots of great possibilities to keep me busy for awhile. Thunderbolt Trail (which I’ve hiked before) is definitely on my radar, but I think I’m likely to enjoy it more next year after I get better at this. :)

    Alpine Touring at Waterville Valley

Fun day today at Ascutney even if the terrain was a bit challenging after the Nor’Easter. Made it up and down without dying so it’s all good. Really need to gain some downhill comfortability on these AT skis so will likely use them for resort downhilling at Stratton during my next play day...

    Catskill 3500 Club New List

So if you didn’t do Doubletop and Graham back in 1983 or so but did the other 33, do you get to now apply for a patch? Asking for probably no one, but there could hypothetically be one person in that situation. Maybe even two.

    Alpine Touring at Waterville Valley

Very cool. Thanks for posting that up. I’m brand new to AT skiing and am planning on hitting the old ski area at Ascutney later this week for my second outing. https://www.ascutneyoutdoors.org/backcountry/ Waterville Valley also looks like a fun area to try although that drive is a bit...

Whiteface Memorial Highway - Ski Conditions

So pretty much as advertised by TCD. Maybe about four or five other cars at the tollhouse when I arrived and one snowmobiler was also part of the day. Forecast had called for clear conditions, but it was mostly soupy during the ascent and then suddenly cleared as I neared the Castle ... so...

Whiteface Memorial Highway - Ski Conditions

Thanks again, TCD, for that perfectly-timed report. Glad you and your friend had a good day, even if unexciting. All set to give it a whirl on Monday. Gonna make my way up north after dropping off my daughter at school, so it’ll be a later start. Mentioned to my wife about possibly being...

Access to Doubletop and Graham in the Catskills now forbidden

OK. Cool. Been more than 20 years since my one and only bushwhack of Doubletop. I guess things have changed. Can’t remember if there was any signage on the Graham jeep road back then. Hardly a unique situation in the Catskills, though. Large and small tract land owners have been at odds...

Access to Doubletop and Graham in the Catskills now forbidden

If they want to make the closing legally enforceable, they’re going to have to put nail holes in a whole lot of trees ... which would arguably be more environmentally damaging and less aesthetically-pleasing than mere footprints in the woods. Putting the word out to the Club and placing signage...
