Any thoughts on my next 4000 ?

Tecumseh, Hale also good I did Tecumseh from the ski area side on Thursday of last week, and I can't think of anywhere on that trail that would give a dog any trouble. The previous suggestion for Hale is also good. TomK

GPS Fun on the Mt Tecumseh Trail 7/25/2013

I suppose I could have posted this under the “GPS Questions” or “Technology and Hiking” threads, but I figured I haven’t done a trip report yet, so why not? This will be as much about my playing with the GPS than about the hike itself. Besides, HubHiker did a nice report on this trail only a...

Taking The GPS Plunge w/ GPSMAP 62s- Have Many Questions

And I have found that the battery discharge indicator isn't tremendously helpful. And when the "low battery" alarm pops up, I've found it really means that the thing will turn off in a minute or two. TomK

Taking The GPS Plunge w/ GPSMAP 62s- Have Many Questions

A few things that drove me batty See that you made the purchase. A few things that drove me nuts (short trip) that maybe you can avoid: Like DougPaul said, get some rechargable batteries, a pair in the unit, and a pair to use as spares if the batteries run out. From the main menu, Hit Setup...

Taking The GPS Plunge w/ GPSMAP 62s- Have Many Questions

I bought a Garmin GPSmap 62s about a month ago... I bought a Garmin GPSmap 62s in May. Like you, I had zero experience with GPS before I got this unit. Some of my experiences in learning to use it are in this thread (starting around reply #22)...

    REI Changes Its Warranty Policy

REI, LL Bean REI: When I purchased my GPS from REI a few weeks ago, I had a long conversation with the clerk, during which I mentioned my zero experience with GPS, and what if I tried it out in the field, and couldn't get the hang of it, could I return it? He explained the return policy, and...

    GPS questions

Thanks for the encouragement Kevin, Tim, and DougPaul, thanks for the encouragement and hints. I found that moving the location arrow will get me not only the distance, but a N,S,E,W,NE,SE,SW, or NW bearing. Would like a degree bearing, but it's a start. The newer Garmin GPS units apparantly...

    GPS questions

A new GPS user vs Garmin GPSMAP62s (the GPS is winning) I’d been thinking about getting a GPS for a while now, and this thread prompted me to go ahead and do it. I picked up a Garmin GPSMAP 62s from REI. The primary reason for getting it is emergency navigation in case I manage to get myself...

Conditions along AT in MA or nw CT

AT / Pine Knob Loop 4/4/2013 This afternoon was so nice I did the Pine Knob Loop in Sharon, CT which joins the AT for a short bit, less than a mile, at about 1,000ft. Just a bit south of the area you are looking at, perhaps. I saw only traces of snow/ice, and even those were few and far...

Hillsound Trail crampons vs. Kahtoola micro spikes

Traction care? I picked up a pair of Hillsound Trail Crampons this year and have used them a couple time and was wondering if folks that have used them (or similar traction devices) for a while could post any tips on taking care of them so they will last as long as possible - I've been rinsing...

Is There a Name for the Craggy Section of Franconia Ridge S, of Mt. Lincoln's Summit?

Embedding an attached picture I don't post much, but I did manage to attach a photo to a post, and then have the picture displayed as part of the post. Here is what I remember working... The URL for the picture is enclosed with . But how do you find out the URL for the attachement? I used...

Article about the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps)

My Dad was also in the CCC, in Colorado - perhaps with Stash's dad, who knows. I remember him telling me about living in tents in the dead of winter. Also, virtually all his pay got sent back home to his mom - he only got to keep a small amount. From the sounds of it, there wasn't much or...

    Walking Music

Some tune thoughts Funny what can pop up on an iPod set to shuffle… Today I had just stepped on the trail, and out of the headphones pours “Also Sprach Zarathustra”. Made a local trail in CT almost seem like looking out over the Pemi from West Bond. I contra dance, and the jigs, reels and...

    QR Codes on the Trail

It's the recurring costs of a smartphone The occasional costs to acquire and periodically upgrade a smartphone isn't as big a deal as the recurring costs for service/data every month. I have a non-smart prepaid phone, and my total *yearly* costs are about $100. It would be possible to work...

Anyone been on the Housatonic River above Falls Village?

Has anyone been on the Housatonic River above Falls Village in the past week or so? Was thinking about doing that section (up and back from the put in just above the dam) sometime over the weekend or early next week, and was wondering if anyone had been out that way recently. With the river...

    Pine Knob Loop 08/31/2011

Pine Knob Loop 08/31/2011 Trail is now in good shape after the hurricane. Crossing of Hatch Brook at the start of the loop, the water is at the top of some of the stepping stones, but you ought to be able to keep your feet dry. The AT also crosses Hatch Brook just a few steps from where it...

What (or who) got you hiking?

Before 1988: The Boy Scouts got me into this... 1988-2009: The great drought - only hiked a couple times :( 2010 forward: A desire to lose a little weight, get into better shape, get back outdoors, and maybe even get my remaining 3 NH4Ks. You folks on VFTT get a fair amount of credit, too...
