Hunt and Pt 1780 (near Baxter) ME

Roy--thanks for the resource on the towers --it appears that the 60' tower on Hunt was removed in 1931 and transported about 14 miles SE to Lawler Hill to replace the original (1914) 28' tower on Lawler and was then itself removed for good in 1978--neat stuff --"1790"--i've not found anyone...

Hunt and Pt 1780 (near Baxter) ME

Back from hibernation to resume pursuing my oddball ME list. I've been chomping at the bit with the light snow load and the recent warm weather, but the snow hangs a bit longer up here and the long dirt road access I need for most of my peaks is pretty iffy this time of year. I hoped to start...

try this on PC ---type your number, say 78 --for the "degree" symbol, while holding down the "Alt" key, type 0176 on the numeric keypad (not the numbers at top of keyboard), release the "Alt" key--wala, simple, works :) jim

    trail running suggestions

not sure if this area works as "south of Bangor" (it's between Bucksport and Ellsworth), but lots of nice, good footing dirt roads/trails, hills if you want, few people; almost all the snow is gone. especially on the roads--if interested, see map on site or i'll be glad to try to help on...

Bend, OR-hike advice for August 2010

Hey--am hoping to spend 5ish days in Bend area next August while vising daughter in Portland -plans are pretty nebulous right now, but looking for suggestions on 1) place/campgrounds to set up a small tent (potable water and privy would be nice) 2) of more importance, interesting hikes in...

hey--not sure you'll see this--just got your letter, haven't read yet, but Shelli did--she talks about coming up to your house to sell Girl Scout cookies--didn't realize you were on here--my "exploits of last 3? years are all on here under trip reports especially since i finished the NHHH and...

    Whitecap (Rumford) ME

...Record hi temps and heavy rain over much of Maine yesterday cleared out snow/ice on lower peaks so i pulled my gear out yet again to climb Whitecap (Rumford)-2210', by far the lowest of the 4 ME Whitecaps on my lists of last few years; others being Whitecap (Oquossoc), Whitecap (Sunday...

Sally (not the tower peak) ME

Sally Mtn-2236' is near Jackman. It's not the "trailed" tower summit 2221' which is also an interesting little journey.--still no snow/ice anywhere on peaks of this height in W and N Maine On my way to Jackman on one of those dark 3 AM drives, i came as close to collecting a moose as possible...

    Chandler & Horseshoe (ME)

Roy--i wasn't looking for anything specific (except perhaps a jar/can-nothing of course), but i did spend a bit of time on top wandering around as it was nice, very open woods and bright sunshine--saw no trace of anything/anyone--when i talked with the ranger later in the day, she said there had...

    Chandler & Horseshoe (ME)

yeah, i know, i was hanging up my gear for the year after Elephant and Prong Pond....couldn't resist..still no snow/ice of consequence on lower peaks up here. Headed up 95 at 3AM, to Smyrna Mills, Ashland and in North Maine Woods 6 Mile Gate (open until Thanksgiving weekend-$6, well worth it)...

    boardwalk traction

so rather than slip and break a leg, i studiously avoid the boardwalks causing even more damage :)

    boardwalk traction

when i was on the AT in the south, they had heavy, diamond shaped opening wire like used as base for tile floors on many boardwalks--worked super--always wondering why i never see this in the northeast j

Bay Circuit Trail - Nov. 15, 2009 (Completed)

M--congrats; know you enjoyed the journey The BCT is very different from what I usually do, but the type of trail/hike I wish i could do more of --a bit of everything, woven into the fabric of civilization/everyday life jim

Elephant & Prong Pond Mtns (ME)

bonus hike day for me...my "season" is usually long since done, but unusually warm weather the last four days swept all vestiges of snow/ice from the lower peaks--perfect day for hiking, sunny, little wind, but 20 degrees with a fair number of gunners on the prowl-deer seem in very short...

    Wiggin, Clark, Douglas, Stone (ME)

Hi Roy -i got my MEP300 list just a few months ago, so think it's the "best/latest" guesses AM has -you aroused my curiosity so i went to the COHP site and looked around --they list Clark as 1320+ and Hosac at 1320 --both peaks have a 1320 contour, but the area inside Clark's is much...

    Wiggin, Clark, Douglas, Stone (ME)

Hi again Roy---thanks for info---my "list" of 1300+ MEP300 peaks is from AM, moderator of pretty reputable Peaklist Prom site whom i'm sure you know (i think you've "vetted" the MEP1000 for him)- -i suspect the big list is subject to beta changes, but "bogus"-a bit harsh perhaps??...should it...

    Wiggin, Clark, Douglas, Stone (ME)

Hi Roy-- re Clark-not sure what you mean by 1/2 a HP--is the other "half" Hosac which is 0.5 miles to Clark's SE?...only Clark is listed on the P list..i of course don't make the lists, just hike them ;) obviously i don't know the right people .....i agree that it'd be less than a 1/4 mile...

    Wiggin, Clark, Douglas, Stone (ME)

-took advantage of an excellent Nov 1 day to do 4 small peaks in York and Cumberland Counties The Halloween eve drive from Orrington to stay with my friend Amicus for early start on Sunday was a bit surreal. The small towns and roadsides were filled with the orange of hunters exiting the woods...

Blue Ridge, Scammon, Indian (Greenville ME)

Roy--i "quit" those at 91? 92/100? in late 80s because i was getting a bit worried (as was my family) re me not coming back some day :)--then a serious back issue intervened for 3-4 years; i stopped off trail altogether until a few years ago and now of course have the bug again-bit late for...
