    Quabbin reservoir

Here's a map of where we would do a loop hike at Soapstone starting at Gate 37 - Part of it (Cutoff Trail) is somewhat of a bushwack. The easy way is to turn right after the casueway and head straight up the steep slope and return the same way.

    Snowmobiling for Hikers

I had a skidoo in the 70's and 80's. Also been the proud owner of go karts, motorcycles and the like. I'd love to get another sled, but there isn't enough snow here or back home in western NY. I have been thinking about getting a 4x4 utility quad bike to replace the Kubota and mow the acres...

    Looking for NJ hikes

Tom, I am incresing my activity in NJ and just picked up a couple of books on NJ trails (getting tired of the AT :D )... One is from Bruce Scofield called something like "Circuit trails in Northern NJ". (I think Bruce wrote or edited some of the ADK guides or trail series). The other is from...

    Quabbin reservoir

When we lived in Sterling, My small son and I hiked there frequently. I thought we posted a map to Soapstone mountain on VFTT a few years back. If you would like, I can dig it out and send it to you. It is a very nice short hike which affords some wonderful views.

    "Ayaah, to cold to snow."

I always thought it was a reference to no clouds to hold the heat in, hence on those bitter -5 and colder days you would not get snow unless a cloud cover came in and warmed the area up a bit by retaining/reflecting some earth heat (and brought snow...?) But now that it was...

Hope for lovers of Sherpa snowshoes

Just curious, since I noticed the Sherpa "praters" online while I was listing my 9x30 Sherpas with Tucker binding on Ebay. I am not expecting to get more than $125 for mine which are still in very good shape.... Should I just hang on to them as backups at this point? Save them for my son (7)...

Sherpas with Step-in bindings (Prater?) Spotted on Ebay

I am posting this at the risk of angering PB or DM, but I am hoping the risk is negligible compared to the VFTT Member value (some lucky VFFT member might buy them) of these very hard to find Sherpa Snowshoes I just spotted. Disclaimer:They are not mine, and I know nothing of them, other than...

    MSR Fuel Pump Problem

Flypn, I don't think it was the cold, unless there was some water in your fuel and it clogged the filter and froze (unlikely). If your stove and bottle are brand new, odds are there might have been some foreign material in the bottle or on the filter. It has been a while since I pulled one...

    Finally bought a kayak

May?? June??? What's with this Warm weather Kayaking....??? I keep a steel hull on my yak to break through winter pack ice! Seriously, I think down here, even April is a good time to get out. I do tend to stay very close to shore when the water is cold. Daxs, Mountain biking might be fun to...

(About 1h:15 out of NYC) Meet up on a Friday evening and have a nice paddle in, paddle around on Saturday and pack out on Sunday? Those who want to hike in can...

    2008 Garmin Topo Mapsource

Ended up getting this around Thanksgiving. Still awaiting my rebate, though they did send me an email that it was being processed. Otherwise, I cannot begin to describe how cool this software is. What is especially cool is not only the profil view of your tracks, but that it automatically...

    Noah John Rondeau

Nice timing. I decided just last night to bring my 7 year old on a backpack from LL to LP this summer. Last time I was through the village was around 94 or so - It si a peaceful, beautiful place to hike through. My conversation with him last night went from discussing Cold River Valley (and...

    Decline in AMC/ADK Memberships&Visitors

Between ADK and AMC Memberships, I think I was at $100/year. I used to do workshops and lead trips for both organizations, but it also seemed for years I was an anomaly - One of the younger folks in the chapters - I did many things with a very small group of people - Probably 3-4 that were like...

Joshua Tree National Park area - recommended hikes

Marty, I used to have to visit one of our Subsidiary companies not to far from there back in the 90's. I always brought my dayhiking gear and planned my trips to include weekends. In Spring 1996, I backpacked across Joshua Tree on the California Hiking Trail over 3 days. I would recommend an...
