    Entire Gunstock Mountain Staff resigns

What Metsky said. It ia an easily verifiable fact that NH has been targeted by the Free State movement. Many members have moved here with a plan to take power by becoming members of the bloated 400-member state legislature. Next job is to legislate into existence their vision of a no-tax...

Hiker Rescue - I think they didnt have a map

Correct and there are lots more especially around Mt Major. And these signs have helped a lot of confused rookies find their way home.

    Entire Gunstock Mountain Staff resigns

I think it’s goes a bit deeper than mere power struggle. There are several NH state legislators who believe the state has no business running a commercial enterprise like a ski area. Better to privatize those ski areas and let experts manage the business and reap the profits. And this issue...

    Mt Washington Car Fires

The gaps in fire prevention are indeed astounding. A $3M, 70 foot yacht burned to the water line and sank in the mouth of Portsmouth harbor two weeks ago. Three million bucks and ya don’t even get any kind of fire suppression system? Yacht was named Too Elusive!

Hiker Rescue - I think they didnt have a map

One of the nice things about cell phone apps is the ability to see in real time exactly where you are located on the map grid. I’ve used this feature a few times in the Belknaps to determine whether to go left or right at a trail junction. Zoom out for the big picture and in for trail junction...

Hiker Rescue - I think they didnt have a map

Interesting. I believe the rock bag technique was also used around Washington summit. The days of Guy n Laura rearranging rocks on Franconia Ridge are long gone I guess.

Hiker Rescue - I think they didnt have a map

Nah. That's the most info overloaded busiest sign ever! Why not add: Key West 1,832 miles. --> <-- Montreal 104 miles <-- Dublin Ireland 4,300 miles Everest Base Camp 16,873 miles. --> You guys Kill me!!

I never got lost up there. Other places maybe, but not there.

Hiker Rescue - I think they didnt have a map

Exactly. Look at the Laffy summit in Google sat view and you can see the issue. That is not a clean trail junction. There are many herd paths on the summit and a newbie might be easily confused, especially in low viz. I suggest a big sign like the one atop Kathadin that mentions landmarks...

Hiker Rescue - I think they didnt have a map

So true. The report alludes to rain and wet condx. So maybe low viz was also a factor atop Laffy. These dudes are not the first and will not be the last to motor north from that summit instead of turning west. Improved signage there is probably a better idea than at the base. Then there's the...

Hiker Rescue - I think they didnt have a map

Interesting how the FS let the AMC do the heavy lifting on this rescue. Makes sense I guess given the location and lack of serious injury, etc..

    Amazing Avalanche Video

Yup, pretty scary. I expect similar events will occur in the glaciated mountains of the Pacific Northwest and Canadian Rockies as the climate continues to heat up. This will make climbing Rainier, Robson and other glaciated peaks like playing Russia roulette.

Sleeping in cars allowed at Lafayette Place?

With the demise of joints like Hikers Paradise, and the high cost of AMC accommodations, trampers have few alternatives if they want a cheap place to crash the night before a hike. Dormitory lodging seems a difficult business to sustain. But a clean, well run and inexpensive operation might...

    Blueberry Reports Please

A couple of quarts I'd say. We picked for two hours and there was no shade to be found up there. Just the rocky barrens of the ridge. I was getting loopy in the sun. Not to mention the work of getting up and sitting down a hundred times! Gimme those the HIGH bush berries.

    Blueberry Reports Please

Spent yesterday picking near the summit of Straightback Mountain in the Belknaps. Berries were small but crazy abundant. Should of had a rake! Wife thinks next weekend will be the peak. Thanks for the beta folks.

Sleeping in cars allowed at Lafayette Place?

I wonder human waste --the collateral damage of trailhead camping-- is the real issue. For trailheads not equipped with permanent toilets or seasonal porta potties, what's a hiker to do?

Sleeping in cars allowed at Lafayette Place?

OMG I remember being rousted in the wee hours many a winter night sleeping in my car in the Pinkham parking lot in the 70s. The AMC had this little old guy who ruthlessly patrolled that lot all night. He could spy fogged up windows at 100 yards and fully open windows at 200! And no sob...

    Lost Town of Livermore

The summer NH Chapter newsletter has a nice article about the lost town of Livermore. Interesting reading for you history buffs. Also an article about the construction of Mad hut with some great donkey pics . Those poor critters could each haul two 2x8 roof rafters!

    Amazing Avalanche Video

Here's a video of a large kyrgyzstan avi that shows an amazing amount of material moving toward the hiker from a looong way away. Reminds me of the tsunami footage from areas inundated in Japan. It just keeps on coming! As the photographer says... "Oh dear god!"
