LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

We're still guessing. Was her camera found, or a cell phone? What was the state of her belongings? Did they look like they have been ravaged? Did it look as though she may have set up her tent? Were her remains really found in a sleeping bag?

Trail Trees - Native American trail blazing system

I was thinking about this overnight. With of our oldest trees, the really tall old ones, we would be looking higher up in the branches for signs. But trees don't grow that way. Some don't know that if you carved initials in the tree when it was young and short, those initials would be about at...

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

As my recently departed mom said before she died, "A bunch of "ifs" is only a maybe." I think that words such as "could" and "might" and "maybe" and others, fall into the same innocuous category. Are we satisfied? No. Is her family satisfied? I hope so.

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

The coronor's report was supposed to satisfy us, but certainly has not done that. I wonder/hope her family knows more. If they believe that report, they have their eyes closed.

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

For this one, no names or genders were given, which I thought was interesting because often they are identified. While public shaming is not a good thing, public information is. My other thought on the link is, "I must be a man."

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

And I think 98% of the people hiking are doing pretty well and do not call for assistance. Are there numbers on that? I don't know, but there are far more people hiking than we hear need help. That's a good thing, of course. And I say with assurance that I would self rescue, but after reading...

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

Dug's right. And there were many from F&G and S&R who thought she was prepared enough that she should not be charged.

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

I'm not sure about the map and compass. That's the one, though. She would have found the way out the next morning, had just placed a heads up call. Maps and compass are hard to use if there is zero visibility and you are mired in deep snow off trail. A storm had come in a bit ahead of schedule...

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

As in, when we become so focused on our goals that nothing else seems to matter? That's a hurdle to overcome for some high achievers.

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

The woman who was benighted a few years ago called to inquire if anyone might be around where she was lost. Because she called with an inquiry, the S&R was put into motion. At least that's the way I remember it from her and the story. It's like my mother calling 911 a few years ago, then...

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

They are of the "Vacation State of Mind" mindset where bad things can't happen to them. And so, I recommend the book Deep Survival by Larry Gonzales which goes into this. Oh, wait. "They" won't read it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0028Z4LUU/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?ie=UTF8&btkr=1

I thought we would have heard about more rescues, too. Nice that the group separated, huh? I'd be interested in knowing how that conversation went when they met up.

    Recent Rescue on Washington

If they went out of sight and he saw another trail sign, he might have thought it was just as well. Or maybe he couldn't remember what they had told him? They should have said, go back down the way you came up. Maybe they did. Wouldn't it be nice to have their perspectives.

    Recent Rescue on Washington

We hikers do want more information about such events as this. I wish a news reporter of some sort would do a follow up story. The guy is easy enough to find with a simple Google. But, he survived and we have much more important news, like what Trump has to say.

Mysterious Grave at Mt Langdon Trail Head

Bringing up an old thread because I was curious about the grave. So much so that I annoyed some stinging bees in the ground and have the pain to remind me of bees this time of year. We went to Cave Mountain and to the lookout above it. We didn't see the Acercone memorial, but did some stone...

    Sad News - Eric Scoville

Some may remember that a few years back, Eric suffered terribly in a climbing accident. He came back and was active again. He died suddenly while hiking. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/unionleader/obituary.aspx?n=eric-d-scoville&pid=175832596

    Toilet Paper in the backcountry

I put my used TP into a zipped pocket in my shorts, soiled part inside the scrunched up paper (which is actually a piece of paper towel, much stronger). No need for plastic bags. I'm not afraid of my own waste.
