Thanksgiving in the Whites (or VT?). Where to eat?

I was thinking of spending Thanksgiving in the mountains. It could be NH or VT, but since I am so much more familiar with NH, that seems most sensible. I would like to camp at a campground (Crawford Notch? Kanc?), hang at an awesome dinner place for warmth and some good cheer, and then get back...

    North Percy Peak camping

Correction Not to be a nag, but for searching and all that jazz, it is actually called the Cohos trail, not the Coos trail. Nash Stream Forest just happens to be my favorite areas in NH. Hope you enjoy!

    Moosilauke question

I share Dave's idea, and MichealJ's. Just did the same trip last week (the up Gorge, down Asquam Ridge one). Beaver Brook in the winter, for sure. Lovely. And sledding down is a blast.

    Is this a marten?

Nauman Tentsite / Marten Had one of those basically run up to me at Nauman one morning. He hung out for about 30 seconds and took off. I knew it was a rare moment. Very cool. Also had a saw whet owl land on a low branch right next to me at the same platform a year later. Another awesome moment...

Explorer's Guide 50 Hikes North of the White Mountains

I will have to ask him about these "afoulnesses." I bet they are a good laugh. I do know that he hiked all of the trails just before publishing the book in order to validate the validity. Concern should be the least of your concerns. Go and enjoy my brotha.

Explorer's Guide 50 Hikes North of the White Mountains

Happy for Kim Nilsen, the fearless creator of the the Cohos Trail, that his book has reached Amazon (and other places). Check it out if you are looking for a little more solitude. If the writing is anything like his character, I am sure that it is a fun read...

    Hiker survives!

The cold desert It gets damn cold in the desert! I was just backpacking last month in the Gila Wilderness (NM) and was able to enjoy great days of hiking and wonderful temperatures, but had to keep in mind that the nights would be cold. Oddly enough, I was two days into my trip when the well...

    Monongahela National Forest

Dolly Sods Don't miss Dolly Sods. I have hiked most of that area of West Virginia, and almost all of the Sods, and nothing compares. You will see all kinds of birds, snakes, bear and deer. The plants and biology will amaze you. Hike "Roaring Plains" if you can. It is a nice long day hike, and...

    QR Codes on the Trail

The only way that I will like them. If someone hand carves them with a chisel, I will be impressed.

    QR Codes on the Trail

Just please stop saying, "I am sorry that it bothers you." That is what is bothering ME. It is just condescending. I targeted no one in my posts (other than this discussion). If anyone is offended, that is their choice. Signed, "Senior Member" who might be "Member No More."

And you are a moderator? Tim, You are supposed to weed out the personal attacks, not create them. I realize that we have a difference of opinion on some things, but let's be nice about it, please. The parks are for all, yes, and they were created and passionately protected by people that...

    QR Codes on the Trail

Oh boy, enough with the cell phones! How annoying will it be, during the popular times, to have a line at trail junctions just so people can put their phone up to a sign? Just obnoxious! If hikers need that kind of guidance to get through the woods, well, err, I think we have some bigger...

    Snowshoes in the whites...

And your reasons are apparent. So, yes, love the snowshoe. Traction and floatation with enough snow=good reason. I am talking about other conditions, but suddenly I am disappointed with myself for getting involved with a posthole/showshoe thread. See you soon.

    Snowshoes in the whites...

Waste of money? I usually do more hiking in the winter than any other season. If there is snow, I am almost always wearing crampons. They just give me traction. I carry my shoes out of respect and consideration for the oddball conditions that I might not be able to foresee. Many times, the...
