Horn and Cabot via Unknown Pond, Aug 7-8, 2010

Trails: Unknown Pond from Mill Brook Road; Kilkenny Ridge; side trail to Horn Conditions: Fine; but with some mud, especially lower Unk. Pd. Trail. All trails could use a bit of brushing out. A few blowdowns on Unk. Pd. Tr., easy to step over. Bog bridges on Kilkenny Ridge Tr. are...

46-year-old hiker from Hinesburg dies on Hunger Mountain trail

I agree with Taconic and Roy. As a slow-but-ambitious hiker (NOT a "weak" hiker) I mostly go solo to avoid issues of making people wait for me. If I am with friends, I would like for them to go at their own pace and just wait for me at trail junctions, outlooks, or summits. Otherwise, if I...

easy 4K where I can see other flags on Flags On The 48

Youch! I would most certainly NOT take a first-time hiker on the Caps Ridge Trail. It may be relatively short; but definitely NOT for beginners - too steep, rough, and exposed. Your thought of Tecumseh is probably the safest bet for a beginner hiker. Or Mt. Tom would work. Maybe Pierce if...

The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

One of the goldenrods? Found fairly frequently between 3,000' and 4,700' elevation on North Twin trail in the White Mountains. Anyone know what it is?

Twins via North Twin Trail, Aug. 1, 2010

Trail Condition: Trail in good shape. Minimal mud. Perhaps could use a bit of light brushing out in a few places. Although Little River was not particularly high, crossings did require a bit of care and some wetting of the boots. (We chose to avoid the lower two crossings on the return by...

    New photo project/assignment

Tom, Would you be willing to post an August 2010 photo assignment? Or anyone else out there?

    Trapper John Shelter

David, I think the chimney may be older and from the original house that was there (before the cabin). Do you know if that is true? I remember seeing a house/cabin up there around 1973 or 74. Does anyone know when was the DOC cabin built? Here is the sewing machine in the woods just above...

Jefferson via Caps Ridge Trail July 27, 2010

Trail Conditions: Trail mostly in good shape. Could use some brushing out after the first mile. Bugs not bad. Water availability for dogs along this trail is limited. The potholes at mile one catch rainwater and there is a small seep coming out of the rock between the First and Second Caps...

    New photo project/assignment

Blaze - great ones of the Thunderhole and of your kids. While hiking this spring I tried to get one similar to the from-below photo of your daughter jumping the split rock; but my dogs were not as cooperative as your kids, and I wasn't quick enough.

    Trapper John Shelter

Jason, if you find the photo, please do post it. I should go up there myself and take a photo. I am still kicking myself that I didn't photograph the 1920s car-on-a-wall before it was destroyed. Not that any vandals are reading this but . . . the Antiquities Act strictly prohibits...

    Trapper John Shelter

There used to be several year-round homes up that way, and there are cellar holes and lots of stone walls scattered through the woods. I don't know who Trapper John was, but I believe someone lived up there in the first half of the last century. I vaguely remember as a kid (early 1970s) seeing...

    New photo project/assignment

Dual Jump I took this photo of friends' kids at Squam Lake. The light is awfully contrast-y in this one; but I think it does capture the fun to some extent: P.S. Grumpy - Thanks for your nice comments on my dog photo. Also - Would anyone else like to start a new photo project thread...

    Solo Peakbagging %s

I agree - I am both more likely to get injured hiking with a group, and also more prone to hypothermia (which I consider the biggest hiking danger). Even hiking alone, in the colder parts of the year it is challenging to maintain a pace that keeps the body temperature high enough to be...

    Peakbagger lists question

There seem to be a lot of nice mountains with views that didn't make it onto the 52WAV list. I don't think you will be forced into viewless hiking! I've done about half of the 52WAV already and am looking forward to hiking the rest.

East Doublehead (Squam) via Doublehead Trail, 7/18/2010

Trails: Thompson Road, Doublehead Trail, Crawford-Ridgepole Trail Conditions: Trails in O.K. shape. There were some blowdowns that can all be easily gotten over, under, or around. Thompson is a gravel road in very good shape. Note: As directed in the guidebook, I parked at the pullout...

    Carrigain via Signal Ridge, 7/17/2010

Conditions: Trail in good shape. Brook crossings easy. Water for dogs is limited at upper elevations, though there are a few seeps between 3,000 and 4,000 feet (no water above 4,000'). Congenial mix of hikers along the trail and at the summit. Special equipment: LOTS of water when the...

    Peakbagger lists question

How about the 52-with-a-View list? That one seems to get around quite a bit. Once I finish with the 48 NH4Ks for the second time around (this time with canines), I am thinking it would be fun to tackle a different list. I am not interested in doing a lot of bushwhacking to viewless peaks. So...

The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

Mountain Sandwort, I believe I'm happy to see the "Spring Wildflowers" stretching into summer. This appears to be mountain sandwort. Found on the summit of Garfield. Quite prolific in the cracks in the granite.

Thanks! Thanks for your responses. I will keep a look out for the next reference I see to "100 Best" and will ask the person posting what it is they mean.
