    Ice Farming???

Rule #1, secure pipe. Ours broke free and was hanging about 30' down the cliff rotting out the great natural line. Our farmed wall had about 8"s thick ice on the bottom half, with big chunks scattered about the ground. This sure hints that we had grown a deadass vertical 100' face. I fixed...

    Solo Unsupported January Denali Attempt

Bad Assed. Two friends of mine had successful winter solos up there 20-odd years ago. Another turned around at 16k because, as he says, it was so much more awesomely huge, hostile and remote than in summer and he was simply overwhelmed. It's a mental challenge if there ever was one.

    Ice Farming???

Thanks for all the help thus far. Spraying seems to be the answer but I don't see how to get that going without power. Here's the ultimate in farmed ice.... http://www.alaskaalpineclub.org/IceTower/IceTowers.html Mine should be easier because gravity is on my side. Downfall is I don't...

    Ice Farming???

Cold River, you are on to something and I appreciate the somewhat similar experience. My next step in the trial/error cycle is to plug the end and drill holes every foot over the last 20'. This will also get me a wider sheet and more climbing options. I'm not sure how I can lay layers like...

    Ice Farming???

Hey folks, looking for some help. I posted on NEice and a few others looking for advice and came up empty handed, any of you climbers out there have experience growing ice? I have a 100' dead vertical quarry wall with a natural spring nearby, and 100' of tubing already in place. My issue...

Joshua Tree National Park... and other places... #2

Hey, so glad it worked out for you. Yea, people don't believe that death valley is "right across the street" from Whitney - sort of. I summited one day and spent the night on the dunes near Badwater which was at least neat place to wake up. You also drove through the Alabama Hills on the...

    Climbing Rainier in May-June

True, historically the weather is more settled in mid-summer than early summer. I've been on the mountain in February and July, July is definitely preferred. I'm with Chip, I think you'll be fine. I would go early as it will be more pristine and less beat-out. By mid-summer it looks like a...

Joshua Tree? No, not the album!

J-Tree can be quite cold in the winter with howling winds. I spent a week there one January many years ago. The rock climbing is great but everything else is mediocre. Though further, Death Valley is pretty awesome and (IMHO) a much better destination. I also think Hwy 395 is perhaps the...

    I Love Vermont!

Perhaps not convenient but if you head West from Bennington (Towards Albany) for maybe 10 miles you will come upon The Man of Kent which is a sensational English Pub with all sorts of actual English beer on tap.

    Horseheads NY

Watkins Glen is great and highly recommended. 20 years ago they locked the gate in winter but we could get in and explore. There are several other falls and gorges in the area. It's a hilly and beautiful area especially by the lakes. You'll find plenty to do, just wear your orange and watch...

    I Love Vermont!

Well good, I love Vermont as well. Prospect Mountain is a great xc ski area near Mt. Snow and it gets a surprisingly deep snowpack. BUT... there's not a bit of snow now and it'll take a big weather shift to get us there.

    Maryland Heights and Harpers Ferry

I love that area. So much history, good climbing, fun summer swimming and good hiking.

Another sad story from the Whites

Here's my favorite view on the topic... When I die I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather did. Not yelling and screaming like the 3 people in the car with him.
