Peak Bragging 2021 - Let's hear what you did!

Is there are 100th patch patch? ;) I finished the grid, which some may have already noticed in the grid thread, and finally made it to Acadia National Park :) Tim

    2021 Grid and Related Finishers

I expect so. I know most of the other finishers and none of them are teenagers ;) Tim

    2021 Grid and Related Finishers

I remember Donna finishing the calendar grid on Flume. Colden was her W115. I think Ed has a typo of some sort. Tim

No More Parking at Lowes Store

You can modify your own thread title for 30 minutes after it was created. After that, a moderator can change it. You can change the "subtitle" which appears between the thread and the OP text, and which default to the thread title. Tim

    Katoolah K10 crampons

That is generally sage advice for life in general, isn't it? (Totally not enforceable, however) Tim

No More Parking at Lowes Store

I'm gonna change the title to "SkiGuy says I don't need his permission" ;) Happy New Year, Tim

    Katoolah K10 crampons

Depends on the conditions :) Last time I wore crampons was on the Ammo, 1 year ago, in December, between the hut and Gem Pool. I'm not automatically gonna wear crampons because the Ammo or Hancock Loop is "that steep". I do actually enjoy snowshoeing, unlike so many people who don't. Because...

    Katoolah K10 crampons

It proves, Tom, that even the curmudegonly VFTT member can evolve as gear improves ;) FWIW, I still find that I am (roughly) using * Snowshoes 60% * Microspikes/Hillsounds 20% * Bareboots 15% * Crampons/Grivel G10s 5% If I can bare boot, that is my preference. Tim

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest on NH Chronicle (WMUR)

What about where they redirected water away to simulate a drought? I thought that concept was interesting, but the engineer in me says that the experimental area was way too small to be valid. It's possible they only showed a fraction of the experiment. Then again, my lawn turns brown a few...

    Katoolah K10 crampons

FWIW I have never stepped on a paw with crampons or micros or hillsounds but I have with Flex Alp snowshoes. Given the teeth are inside the perimeter of the deck, there was no blood, just a quick wimper. I do know someone whose snowshoes resulted in stiches for their dog's paws. That my dog...

    Cog Railroad Expanding Winter Operations

I am not a lawyer either but I would bet that Presby and company have a few on retainer and have already covered their behinds or they wouldn't be offering this product. Tim

    The River Runner (possible spoilers)

Well, after watching 14 Peaks and The Alpinist, Netflix recommended The River Runner which is the kayaking equivalent of these other two. Not as gripping as The Alpinist but enjoyable and with a high "pucker factor". Tim

The Alpinist - Another new movie on Netflix *SPOILER ALERT*

Great flick. I waited until I watched it to read this thread (and I hope you don't mind that I update the title a bit, Richard, to warn people about spoilers.) I must have missed the part where his mom was a failure as a parent, however. As far as I can tell, his accomplishments surpass free...

    Polk Ski Trip Advice

I've heard good things about a multi-day ski through of Baxter State Park (home of Katahdin, but skiing Katahdin would be a challenge.) Very light on the specifics, however. Something like ski the winter road in from the north end (Metagammon) and then through Pogy Notch and Russell...

    dated threads

Trail Conditions have largely been replaced by specialized sites which do a much better job at categorizing, search, sorting, etc. trail conditions. Trip Reports have largeley been repalced by Facebook / Instagram since most people just want pictures anyway. Tim

    Handwarmers?

Those Zippos are interesting since they are warmers and battery banks... Can stop carrying the Ankers and use this for either purpose. Ultimately I only use the handwarmers for a small fraction of the day (when I'm not moving mostly.) I imagine they are pretty quick to warm up and cool down. Tim
