One Day Pemi Loop - 21 hikers

From WMNF Forest Management Plan, Appendix E "Wilderness Management Plan" section 5.3 (emphasis original) Wilderness Zone A (areas 500' or more off-trail): "Group number should be kept to a minimum, preferably four or fewer people but never more than ten." Wilderness Zone B, C, and D: "Group...

Proposed radio and helicopter clearings on Cabot, Carr, and Carrigain

I don't know how we all missed this one. Administrative Radio Repeater Improvement Project The project scope is “Install 3 new radio repeaters and relocate and enhance 1 existing repeater to increase FS radio coverage on the WMNF where good coverage is lacking and allow for Forestwide...

North and South Baldface Loop Question

I like clockwise, and while the ledges on South are pretty awesome, having done them I now prefer to go up the Slippery Brook trail and approach Baldface Knob from the side, it's a nice trail and a beautiful area. Coming down, Bicknell Ridge is a *lot* easier than BFC, which drops super steep...

    baxter state park

Last year when I was there, Kidney Pond was posted no-swimming.

    baxter state park

FYI: the lobster roll at Red's Eats in Wiscasset is highly overrated.

    baxter state park

There's a nice little sandy beach at Togue Pond just outside the park gate and the swimming is quite nice. Also fun is canoeing or kayaking around the numerous ponds. Some have drive-up access, others are more remote locations, where you get the key from the ranger, hike in to the location, and...

    Owls Head higher summit

The higher summit wasn't forgotten about - a bunch of herd paths all formed to go there from the "former" summit. It's quite obvious now.

    MSR Fuel Cannister Fuel remaining

I've always used a kitchen scale but I do like the floating-in-water trick.

    NH Bike Week has started

I actually slowed down and yelled at people running across 93 at Lafayette to use the tunnel.

    Presi "lite" saturday

Saturday's the Mount Washington Road Race so skipping the summit crowds is a good idea!

    Bridge Status In Pemi Wilderness

You can actually type that “N44 07 15.3, W71 30 23.3" right into the Google Maps search box. You should get this: https://www.google.com/maps/place/44°07'15.3%22N+71°30'23.3%22W/@44.1208819,-71.5064722,13z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0 Unfortunately I could find no way in the "new" Google...

    Looking for WMNF Gift Suggestions

I have a really nice desktop photo frame that has a small replica summit marker in a corner of the frame, thus combining two of the gift ideas mentioned above; for the life of me, however, I don't recall where it came from. If I do, I'll update this post. It is *not* one of these; however, they...

    GoPro (ish) question

I'll second Voltaic, they make good stuff. You do need to get the right wattage for the device(s) you plan to charge. It's easiest to let the panel charge their battery during the day, then charge your battery from theirs at night.

Annual trip to the Bold Coast of Maine

That's on the bucket list for sure, I'd heard of the location but not actually seen what camping there looks like. Nicely done!

Abol Trail will be closed for the year

From Baxter State Park: ABOL TRAIL CLOSED FOR 2014 Late last winter substantial debris movement occurred on most of the portion of the Abol Trail ascending the Abol Slide. The resulting debris field presents an area of exceptional hazard with a high risk of additional downslope movement of...

Spur Paths And The "No Camping Within 200' Of Trail" Rule

Old logging roads and skidder paths, however, are not trails. So for example if you want to camp someplace in a Wilderness Area, and along the trail you cross an old logging road, you have to walk along it 200' from the trail, but then you can set up right there on the old road.

    Trails up Katahdin Open

    Maine 4K trail stats

Dangit, Steve even showed me that map in the store and I went and forgot about it. Yes, it's by the Wilderness Map Company, and it's a nice map, essential, and a good choice, for the Maine 4k'er.

    Maine 4K trail stats

The newest edition does not have the same maps, it's missing the one from Saddleback to the Bigelows, so if you have the older edition, guard that map with your life.
