Congratulations to Spencer - Appie of the Year

:o Thank you, everyone, for the kind remarks. Sometimes just one (or two - Peter and I were co-winners) get the credit when it is really do to a large group of volunteers that make things happen... spencer

3/14/09: Baxter and Hamlin via Abol slide and a big congrats to Marc on WNE100 finish

Great report! Nice to meet you this weekend, too. I hope your heels heal very soon so you can get back out there.

Map of deciduous parts of forest

If you say what you want to use it for I can be a bit more help. It can get very accurate and very complicated or very coarse and easy. If you prefer to go exploring on your own, you can check out FIA's FIDO. I don't think Granit Mapper has a type map in it although you can get an approximation...

NH has Moose alerts, Maine has Owl Alerts!

I ski there routinely but have not had the pleasure of meeting the owl yet. We had a ski race starting through that area a couple weeks ago and I didn't hear any complaints or see any attacks. I think the snowshoers walking on our ski tracks are a much bigger nuisance :D

    Katahdin via Abol - 3/7/09

Had a fine day with a group of 10 on Saturday, 3/7/09. Broke just a couple of inches from Abol CG to base of slide, thanks to Flight and Co. for breaking it in the other direction on the preceding Monday. There is a lot of snow on the slide - more than I've seen in several previous trips. The...

    What tracks are these

You know, looking at DM's avatar, if someone could drag Dave by his feet, I think the chicken hat might just make a track like that. yup, I think it's an upside chicken.

    What tracks are these

It's missing the pole holes so it isn't likely skis. FWIW - I've seen sap lines several times in that area. If it's a sled being dragged with supplies, you'd expect to see some footprint out of the main track every once in a while. Someone was walking very carefully. the slightly higher ridge...

    BC Skins

Doug, with your actuallies, not necessarilies and once-upon-a-times you are giving advice based on extremes, not the common applications. Just b/c it may be useful in very specific, unusual circumstances doesn't make it good advice. $100 skins for $100 skis? I'd just as soon rub silver klister...

    BC Skins

Don't forget that you have to ski back down what you ski up. I've found myself climbing a lot of stuff on light gear (like what Maria has) on which I wasn't willing to ski down the hill. Overall, I'd question the utility of skins for those skis. Good technique gets you up some pretty steep...

    Abol trail in Baxter

The Tableland is always just a crampon affair. There are occasional pockets of drifts, especially going up the final half mile up the summit cone but otherwise it's very good hardpack. It's raining pretty hard here now in the Bangor area.

    Abol trail in Baxter

Don't be tempted to leave the snowshoes behind. The terrain is highly varied from Abol Bridge to summit and back. A few weeks ago we had to snowshoe about a third of the way up the slide. that was unusual in my experience. usually snowshoes are only needed for the stretch between the campground...

    Igloo mythbusting...

Yankielun just hosted a how-to workshop here at U. Maine last week. Apparently he and a bunch of students built several structures on the mall. Unfortunately, I don't get across campus too often so I haven't seen them yet. I fear that the heavy rain today has done serious damage. I guess I...

Maine ties with VT in the Cold Bowl

As part of my data-hungry demeanor, I've been keeping close tabs on degree heating days this winter and January was 16.7% colder (in terms of degree heating days) than the 5-year average for January. The average actual temp for my area for January was 7.4 deg. F.

    Musings about the Highland center

If you sort that list by descending 2007 salary, Falendar is 14 out of 39 in the database. How mediocre of him... he should either push his way to the top and be an achiever or sit back and be noble :D I wanted to stay at Joe Dodge this weekend and they wanted $64 for a bunk and breakfast...
