Maine ties with VT in the Cold Bowl

It's official. Maine has tied with VT for NE's coldest recorded temperature, on Jan. 16: -50F. That was the morning Franconia hit -35F, which is not a record here. (But insurance adjusters are still processing all the claims.) It's still a ways to go to the world record of -129F.

As part of my data-hungry demeanor, I've been keeping close tabs on degree heating days this winter and January was 16.7% colder (in terms of degree heating days) than the 5-year average for January.

The average actual temp for my area for January was 7.4 deg. F.
