    Direttissima Hikes in the Whites

That wasn't the discussion I was thinking of but good find anyway. Yes, I used to be much more active - I just check in occasionally now. There were some similar discussion from well before that. Anyway, send me your snail mail and I'll get a copy of the article to you.

    Direttissima Hikes in the Whites

I didn't have much luck searching the wayback machine for old VFTT threads but if there is another way, it might be a fun blast from the past. I would have sent you a copy just for asking but now that you've offered something in return...:D

    Direttissima Hikes in the Whites

I forgot to account for DougPaul literalism when I wrote that :D Yes, I think it was the first time the term was applied to hiking the 48 in the shortest route. Folsom did it in more than one "trip" but his claim to fame was more about figuring out what the shortest route to include all peaks...

    Direttissima Hikes in the Whites

I had a similar interest several years ago (sometime around 2003, probably) and had some VFTT discussions about it but that was well before the last crash. I had grand thoughts of doing it myself, but other bugs bit me. VFTT's favorite enigma, Evilhanz, pointed me in the right direction: The...

Land Gift for Baxter State Park on Katahdin Lake

I spent some time on Katahdin Lake last winter with family and friends: That is South, North, and East Turner on the horizon and my 11-month old's head poking out of my jacket :D

    Retiring to Maine?

You are going to be pleasantly surprised how much of that there is in the Belfast area. Look at Brooks, Liberty, and Searsmont. You really have to come and drive a round to get the feel of the countryside. Most of those towns will have plenty of opportunities for acreage, will not have any...

    Retiring to Maine?

If you have the flexibility to live where you want and are not tied to being within some mileage of a career, then Maine has quite a few very good options. Belfast would be at the top of my list but there are many terrific communities all along the mid-coast region. Come visit and see for...

Google street view at ski areas

Anyone else notice the frequent horizontal distortions that show up as black lines in the snow? There is one just uphill slightly of the image in Jay's link.

book review of "Climate Change in the Adirondacks: The Path to Sustainability”

I've had a copy of it sitting on my desk for a few months but have not yet read it. I guess it's time to do so.

Tour du Mont Blanc Planning Q's

In my experience, the often cited reputation of the French looking down on Americans for poor language skills does not hold in the mountains. I was glad to speak rudimentary French on our TMB but it certainly was not required. The one word you'll learn fast in the huts is pichet, as in "Je...

    Personality Profile

I haven't taken the test cited by the OP but I've been professionally tested as an ENTJ three times. Some call it the Fieldmarshal, but I prefer Master of the Universe. :D I'm not sure what it says, but I count peaks about as obsessively as I count logs that I put in my wood stove. Luckily, I...
