Been wondering what are the most popular current names.... Owl's Head? Sugarloaf? Black? Rattlesnake? Bear? etc.? Anybody know a way to find out for sure? I don't want to pore over my Gazetteer if the data is out there. (I did search this forum for the info but couldn't find it).

I was thinking it would be cool hike ALL the Owl's Heads, or, whatever...

I'm working on all the Tom's in the Northeast/USA! :D

All the mountains appear in my Garmin Map, using the free topo (http://www.gameandfishnetwork.com/NE-topo-map.html). There must be a way to get the POIs out of the database, but I don't know off the top of my head. I would spend time going down this road myself before pouring over a book. Maybe there is a POI file used to load into the mapping software somewhere.

There are an awful lot of "Roundtop"s in Catskills, if you care to be a little loose in the naming (allowing pronouns) I haven't noticed the propensity of Roundtops in New England though I can't really say that I have seriously looked either... Might just be a catskills thing.

Haystack is another popular mtn name in many different places as well as Sugarloaf.

Using the GNIS "summits", there are:

15 Pine Hills
14 Oak Hills
11 Bald Hills
11 Beech Hills
10 Bald Mountains
9 Prospect Hills
8 Peaked Hills
8 Sugar Hills
etc.

Interestingly, there are 6 Meetinghouse Hills, 5 Mounts Misery, 4 Bible Hills,

Overall, there are 223 names attributed to more than one "summit."
I'm not going to list them all, but go ahead and ask about your favorite name.

Over here in the Adirondacks we are overrun with "Buck Mtn"s. We also have two named Nippletop within a few miles of each other.

I'm going to go with "Mt. Tom" -- there's the one in Zealand Notch and also one by me in Easthampton MA.

Makes sense to me

"We also have two named Nippletop within a few miles of each other."

Sounds right.

Haystack comes to mind as a common one in NH.

6 NH summits have some form of Haystack in the name. 4 are simply "Haystack Mountain", Bartlett Haystack and Little Haystack Mountain are the other 2.

p.s. Thanks, Mohamed... I knew the data was there someplace. Didn't have time to look for it over breakfast. I will add it to my collection of databases :D

[Bald in Maine] 17 (2nd highest count).

The most frequent summit name in Maine is Oak Hill, with 32.
If you add up Hedgehog Hills and Hedgehog Mountains, there are 21, which would be the 2nd highest count in Maine.

You can also use the "Find" feature on Nat Geo Topo, searching the "Summits, Cliffs and Rock Formations" file for a particular State. Searching "Bald" for Maine, I found 32, ignoring compounds and three-word names, which probably ranks it second to "Oak" for Maine (for which I get 37 hits, using this method). The 32 "Balds" comprise:

- 17 Mountains,
- 5 Hills,
- 3 Peaks,
- 2 Ledges,
- 2 Heads
- 1 Rock,
- 1 Bluff, and
- 1 Pate (not a "Baldpate").

For New Hampshire, my top 5 using this method are:

1. Bald: 27,
2. Pine: 20
3. Oak: 17
4. Prospect: 16, and
5. Beech: 13.

Here are the "Summits" grouped by name including all those that appear 3 or more times. 2 or more increases the results by about 140.

I have an old trip report here on hiking my 4th Owls Head, which is on the shore of Newfound Lake :)

But I later found yet another near Squam I haven't been to yet, so you can still be #1 on your next non-list :)

It's shown on the USGS topo: west shore, northwest corner, just south of Roger's Ledge and Hebron Bay.
