Flags on the 48 --2013 edition

I took S. Carter because I'll be around Camp Dodge that day. :)

    Waterfalls near Appalachia

Thanks for the reminder of how pretty these falls are. Everyone is usually in too much of a hurry going up Valley Way!

Dry River Trail to Davis Path - Bushwack

That looks cool, but the Dry River Trail is also closed.

    Isolation day-hike from Highland Center...

Isolation Trail from the Dry River Trail to the Davis Path is closed as far as I know. Here, I just checked- yes it is closed: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/whitemountain/home/?cid=stelprdb5371104 It is a bear of a trail under the best of conditions anyway. Why not go Glen Boulder/Davis Path...

GMC Hiking with Dog Video Series

This is brilliant! And so do-able! Thanks for all your advice! (and for not letting your dogs maul me that day I ran into you in the middle of nowhere!)

    Ride from Crawford to Pinkham

I'd hitchhike. Or just go into Crawford Friday afternoon, look for a seasoned hiker to give your spare car key to, and have them drop you off at Dodge. It involves a certain level of trust, but it always seems to work out okay when I do it that way. It helps if you drive a sh*tbox.

GMC Hiking with Dog Video Series

I can totally see where you would face a similar problem as me with Lauky, Ed. As for trail maintenance, I just moved across the street to the southern Presies from the Pemi. Would folks say there are fewer dogs in the Presies than in the Pemi? I think so. A question for dog owners who hike...

GMC Hiking with Dog Video Series

Thanks for the great advice. I am definitely going to try that yawning suggestion. I am sure that everything would be fine if I ran into anyone from here with their dogs in the woods. Oddly enough, I ran into Sabrina, Michael and company a few years ago, and although the dogs were very...

    Best Route For Isolation

I'd guess it was, since the Dry River Trail has been closed since then. Too bad, that was an awesome link in the Southern Presies. Still no word on rebuilding or not.

GMC Hiking with Dog Video Series

That sounds like some good advice in the link. I'm not sure that a dog would respect me when its alpha owner was nearby, however trying to project an air of calmness and confidence is a good idea. A friend who trains working Border Collies has suggested that I carry pepper spray- not to...

GMC Hiking with Dog Video Series

That was pretty cool. I'm so glad they addressed the issue of encountering other hikers who may be afraid of dogs. I am absolutely terrified of dogs and the presence of a dog bounding toward me on a trail is enough to make me literally pass out cold. I think it's great that they reminded dog...

    Best Route For Isolation

I had almost replied with the same answer, but I had noticed the OP was looking for a day hike. While your suggestion is a good one, it would be even more do-able in reverse: Up Glen Boulder and down Davis Path to 302. I have done it that way several times and it is my route of choice for...

    REI Changes Its Warranty Policy

I find this change pretty disappointing. I think the "100% Satisfaction Guarantee" was a big draw for me to shop there. As a longtime member of REI, I have done my share of exchanging items that broke or didn't meet my expectations long after the warranty had expired: a jacket whose zipper...

    Wales and Western England

I just got back from spending two weeks in the United Kingdom. Besides the many touristy things I did in London, I also took several dayhikes in this beautiful land of various terrain. It was a wonderful time. Thanks to those of you here who offered advice on hiking in this part of the world...

Cannon via Lonesome Lake Trail, Hi-Cannon, Kinsman Ridge Trail 5/4/13

Lonesome Lake Trail was fine for the brief 0.4 that I was on it. Hi-Cannon was great- mostly dry. Switched to micro-spikes just before the ladder. Off at the ladder, back on in the snow flats. Great views from the top on this bluebird day- Camel's Hump, Mansfield, Dacks to the left...

Death Valley SAR for people missing over 10 years

I agree. I wish there was more! After I read it the first time (in work), I went home and read it again with all my maps spread out on the kitchen table!

Death Valley SAR for people missing over 10 years

Thanks so much for posting that, Roy! It was absolutely gripping, especially since I had the opportunity to explore Death Valley a few years ago. In fact, I must have crossed paths with the author more than once. What a great read.
