Any worry of bears in White Mountains

I'm going to delete this post as I hadn't remember about the Liberty Springs bear, which could be back this season. Heck, it could be back with offspring. Plastic Bear Canisters are a cramp, but that's a better option there than trying to hang stuff high enough.

    Guns on the trail

You are correct. I mistakenly lumped VT in with NY & MA regarding stricter carry laws. My bad. I apologize. I guess the only thing I can say, in my defense, is that NH open carry seems to be more well known.

    Guns on the trail

 I disagree. How can you exercise a right without...actually...exercising that right ? Otherwise it would be called "atrophying a right."

    Guns on the trail

Is BLM in one of those counties there with their own/different open carry laws ? The situation where I would've liked to have had a gun was regarding a large, rabid raccoon that staggered onto the trail near me during the middle of the day. No paranoia there. It would have been better for the...

    Guns on the trail

This is a good, reasonable discussion. I was looking at my gear. Most of what I carry I never use. In 40 years of independent hiking, camping, hunting and fishing I can say I've only ever wanted/needed a hand gun once. I encourage everyone to exercise their legal rights: If you don't, someone...

    Guns on the trail

Page 6 of this http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Hunting/Hunting_PDFs/Hunting_Digest_2010_11.pdf discusses the issue. It's all about discharging the gun: You can carry one, but may break the law if you discharge it in the wrong place, apparently.

60% Of NH Yearling Moose Population Dying

"60% Of NH Yearling Moose Population Dying" Does anyone know what the average % of NH yearling moose population dying annually is ? 60% might be normal. I know the adult population has shown a decline. There're moose in CT now also. The deer in CT are skinny, but there were 12 in our yard...

    Is My Tent Fly Ruined?

yes no no no How does it smell ? What you have now is a rain fly that's not waterproof, which is fine in the winter, below 30. You might find one on ebay where the tent/poles have been ruined but the fly is fine.

Log cabin on Mt. Cabot trail for sale!

I doubt this will last long. I wonder if the land is leased. A few of us should buy it and make a Club House.

Ski conditions on Wilderness trail / Pemi East trail ?

Agree. It's the same deep snow that was here 3 weeks ago, except melting a bit and rained and frozen upon. Freezing rain at 1800' now. 30 degrees. Should be an interesting mix !

    Snowshoers 1 Bare Booters 0

My first winter in the Adirondacks there were "Wanted" posters in the area for a college student that had gone missing. They found his body in the Spring. That same trip a leader (about 6'5") stepped off the packed trail in the saddle below Marcy summit to pee and went straight in up to his...

snow counts?--can we get some reports from the field?

There's about (actually) 16" of fresh powder at 2000' in Bethlehem, NH. Today (Saturday) it's going to be mild temps so the snow will start to compact. Any trail near here will be a work out if you're the first in.

    Trail conditions in spring

There is good info here. I love the nartreb pic ! For me, and others, there are 5 Seasons: Winter, Mud, Spring, Summer and Fall. I've decided to use Mud to put up wood for Winter and perform camp maintenance. I enjoy the fact that I can do this now without feeling guilty about missing any of...

"ham radio" walkie talkies in the woods ?

Thanks. What you say makes sense. I'll skip them. They had that "cool" factor that appeals to my inner child.

    Twins/galehead loop

Why not just go in on Haystack Road ? It does look like a left, if anything, after the river on Haystack Rd though. I guess you're calling Haystack Rd the snowmobile tracks and that's why you might not want to be there.

"ham radio" walkie talkies in the woods ?

online I saw these http://www.nomorerack.com/daily_deals/view/873826-baofeng_2_way_ham_radio_dual_band_vhf___uhf_fm_walkie_talkie_transceiver cheap enough. I thought they might be a good idea for me and my boys in the woods. Would these actually qualify as Ham Radios where we'd need a license...

Trudeau Rd & Rt 3: There's parking for about 7 cars at the northwest corner of that intersection. 1/4 mile west on Rt 3, just over the Gale River, on the south side is more parking and the entrance to Gale River Loop Rd. You walk a little over a mile (crossing the river again) on the closed...
