    Illegal Ski Trail Cut ...

Jay Peak is a particularly popular destination for backcountry skiers. In fact, the "herd path" to the Big Jay summit was cut by the ski area. The bootleg ski trail off of Jay Peak was cut by renegade ski enthusiasts. I don't think it has much to do with hiking, really. The brotherhood of...

Are you saying that doing them one at a time is the "easy" way?

Lincoln Woods Trail bridge being replaced (10/29-11/9)

This means that the Black Pond bushwhack or the Fishermen's route will be the best way to go for those heading to Owl's Head in the next 10 days. For those heading to the Bonds, the Pemi East Side trail is a nice change of scenery. It will add about a mile to the trip in each direction, but you...

new memorial plaque on Mount Clay

I don't agree that people should have memorials placed on summits like this one was, but why have you taken such lengths to report it to the USFS? Wouldn't it be more respectful to the family to let the rangers find it themselves and deal with it in due course? Raising awareness in the hiking...

Water sample collected from Carrigain well

In case anyone would like some background on this little experiment, see this thread: http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18225&highlight=carrigain It is interesting to note the tone of the opinions in this thread compared to the other thread. (FYI: Last time the over-riding consensus...

Injured hiker carried 8 miles to safety

Good stuff, Bob. If you've ever hiked with him, you wouldn't be surprised by that kind of effort. All in a day's work.

A Taste of Winter on Flume 10-28

MattL is alive after all. I was beginning to wonder what ever became of him! Nice pictures!! I find that your shots are very under-rated amidst all of the fantastic photographers on this website. (That's supposed to be a compliment! ;)) Are you going to try to finish the 48 before next...

Water sample collected from Carrigain well

Well, what do you think? Would you ignore a non-potable symbol and say "I read on the internet that this water is safe to drink..."? I have a feeling Thom will apply the standard disclaimers to the results of this little test. This is pure Darwinism at work. If you choose not to filter the...

    Whats on your wish list?

The cheapie foam blocks save you 2+ MPG whenever you don't have your kayak on the car... seriously - look it up! For me that's $2 per tank of gas. It adds up!

    Worst "footing" in the Whites

I did this trail last winter, and it was indeed quite steep. I had crampons on, so I can't tell you how loose it was. I thought it was fun - and there were great views through the leafless trees acrross to Mts Wonalancet and Passaconaway! Same goes for the Mount Tremont trail... crampons needed...

Man, I was gonna post something just like this, but you beat me to it! However, I would have made it into a poll... I should flame you for being more creative than me! ;)

Best (mass produced)chocolate bar for hiking?

Is this thread about the best candy bar for hiking, or the best tasting chocolate for those with discriminating palettes? Because I usually can't find a better-tasting source of calories-per-dollar than 2 for a dollar Snickers bars at Market Basket! Here's a hint, though - keep them in an...

    Sabbaday Brook 10/20/07

My group was following your boot tracks in the mud down from the TriPyramid ridge at around 1:30 on Saturday afternoon. I knew someone had been through there within 24 hours! Where abouts did you guys camp? I didn't know there were any good spots on Sabbaday Brook trail. We didn't see you...

    Blue Mountain Prominence Question

I did a search on Topozone for the notch elevation. Unfortunately, upon closer inspection, that was the elevation for the town, and not the notch itself. There is no spot elevation listed, but you can see 1940' contour lines on each side of the notch. I was just there Sunday, too. Should have...

    Blue Mountain Prominence Question

Nope, I'm not right.... I just checked again. The actual contour lines in Dixville Notch go up to at least 1,940', and Bunnell Mountain is listed as 3,723', so that would put the prominence at something just under 1,783'. Sorry. But once again... I defer to the "prominence gods" - Roy, et al.

    Blue Mountain Prominence Question

I thought about this when I climbed Bunnell Mountain early last month. (Note: the name has officially been changed from Blue to Bunnell in honor of Vickie Bunnell, a local judge who was killed in the Colebrook shootings in 1997.)...

19 miles in the Sandwich range - 10-20-07

That guy on Middle TriPyramid was weird! We weren't being noisy or blocking the trail or anything, and when we stopped to offer some friendly greetings, he just scowled and grunted a few answers. It didn't seem like he was enjoying his hike very much. Maybe his life is so pleasant that he needed...
