    Loopin' The Northern Presidntials, 1/23/2010

Great report and excellent photos. I especially like the shot of the southern presis from Jeffrerson. The view just keeps on going. . .

    Snowshoes

I have a pair of Atlas 1230s, but they are about 8 years old. Absolutely fantastic and have never had any issues. What I have noticed is the crampons on the bottom are a much thicker metal than what I see on current models. I'll try to post a photo of the toe crampon shortly.

Fitness levels and training (What the HECK!!?)

I agree completely. I would also try to isolate what may be slowing you down. Start with an ideal situation: On a nice summer day, if you were to go for a two-mile hike with no pack, how long would it take? If you did two of these hikes in the same day, would your pace be the same for each...

What ever happened to Koflach boots line???

Koflach was purchased by Atomic in the around 1989 or so. For reasons I do not know, Atomic stopped supplying to the US in 2007. I know they were still supporting the products and you could find them online in Europe. From what I have heard, they have since stopped production altogether. I...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

I'm sorry you feel this way. I may not always be clear on context. But, I'm sure that many others reading your posts are appreciative of the thoughts and experiences you share. I certainly am.

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Maddy, I was unclear in what I was trying to communicate. I was not trying to be sarcastic and meant no insult to you or your friends. My apologies. I was referring to his foresight in not continuing on after his wife's obvious discomfort with the terrain and its evirons. Many incidents we...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Indeed, you did not mention this. I did. There are many variables and questions any AMC info person would have to ask everyone in order to provide a most accurate recommendation. Never took your post(s) as a knock on the AMC. As I mention above, experience and comfort are two of many...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Why would anyone put all of their trust into a recommendation, even if given by someone affiliated with the AMC? This "adviser" was not leading a trip. He/She was not accompanying your friends on their hike. It was a recommendation with no knowledge of your friends' experience, preparedness...

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

On whom would you implement this other method of fees? It would appear that the state of NH has collected $180,000 so far from registering boats and ORVs. I do not own a boat or ORV. Should they be the only ones subsidizing the state's SAR budget? How much, if any, of the WMNF parking permit...

Vermont Life article - Has secret trail cutting gone too far?

I agree, but even in the wilderness there are efforts to thwart unauthorized trail use. Owl's Head Slide immediately comes to mind. Though I'm familiar with goings on, I like the article. In my opinion, cutting, or even manicuring underbrush removes the "backcountry" moniker. Backcountry...

Snowshoes - MSR Lightning Ascent vs. Atlas 10 series

I have a pair of Atlas 12 which are going on ten years this winter. No problems whatsoever. I suppose they may be a bit heavier than what's on the market today, but I'm confident and comfortable when under they are under foot, and that is worth few ounces to me.

    UL packable down parka

Just a thought: If you're out doing work and the temp is -60F, are you terribly concerned if your down parka is UL or not?
