Who are the legends of the New England mountains?

Hey Sherpa, Is that the Doherty that wrote "Smoke from a Thousand Campfires" ? I've been searching for a copy of that book for years . I think that I've read that Joe Dodge referred to him as the "fish cop".

Fall Gathering 9.9999999 - Sep 21-23 White Birches

Where exactly did Bauhaus end and Joy Division begin. All that 80's art school ***** sucked (or at least as I've been told by my elders) but convention dictates that there should be some demarcation between the two.

Jesse Young Rd. in Pittsburg, NH...open?

When I was hiking with He Who Shall Remain Nameless in the Pittsburg area we used a map available at most of the local stores called the Connecticut Lakes Region Road and Trail Guide. It shows many of the forest roads and gate locations. It's published by the Liebl Printing Co. of Colebrook and...

mooning the cog train on Washington

I agree with Wu. I'm comforted by the fact that crime is now so rare in the North Woods that the police require excursion train trips to justify their employment.

    Carrigain well

As Mr. Metsky said, about half the hikers think it's a well and the other half think it's a toilet. I would avoid it.

    Rare RI question

That camp was replaced by the Eckerd Foundation camp just to the east (Ehuntee sp?). The large building with the hearth was intact until just a few years ago and was burned either by vandals or public officials (around here they're pretty much the same thing).

    Bonds Approach

Be careful about camping near Camp 16. There was once a shelter at the Bondcliff/Wilderness junction that's currently a reveg area. The rangers can be aggressive about keeping campers out. Some decent sites can be found a short distance up the Bondcliff trail.

    Presidential Photos and Reviews

I do a Pemi/Bonds trip every Memorial weekend and conditions are never the same from year to year. Two years ago the trail was dry and summer-like from Lincoln Woods to the summit of Bond, 3+ feet of snow from Bond to South Twin , and back to summer conditions by Galehead hut,13 Falls and out...

    Adirondack Hundred Highest

I believe that there was a concerted effort (around 2001 maybe?) to remove all the summit canisters in the Daks. It had something to do with compliance with wilderness area regs.

    Internal temperature inside Gray Knob?

I stayed at Grey Knob a few weeks ago on a Sunday night. I was the only guest and I was comfortable in a 15 degree bag. I was told that there were 17 people the night before (including a writer and photog from National Geographic on a 3 day traverse) and it was actually uncomfortably warm from...

    Two night Baldface trip

Be aware that there are few sources of water on the Baldfaces. Although most shelters in the Whites are built near a water source the shelter on South Baldface has no reliable water nearby. The Baldface loop is a great scenic hike, just be prepared to carry whatever water you may need...
