Is there a canister on 3600+ Hitchcock summit?

On 14th Oct. bushwhacked up Hitchcock 3600+ ft pk. Despite 45 min. of searching did not find a canister but only blowdowns on highest bumps. My watch altimeter read 3620-3630' and I found no higher bumps on ridge. Felt quite confident that I was on actual summit, but not finding a canister was nonetheless disturbing. Has anyone been up there recently & found a register?

Well, there was a register there in 1993-4

But I'll agree that's not recent. I believe Hitchcock is in a wilderness area and some folks, possibly rangers have been removing both signs and registers.

The winter before last we found canisters on all 5 of the Hitchcock peaks. We found 2 canisters on one of the peaks,either the main one(3600) or SE (3500). Post'r Boy could tell ya.

Last year the PVC cannister on the main summit was affixed to a partially uprooted tree that was at a 30 degree angle to the ground. If you were in that blowdown area, I'll bet you were indeed on the summit. I suspect the forces of nature completed the process with the register now on the forest floor underneath a tree trunk.

Just wanted to revive this thread. We went there this week-end and found a canister on Middle Hitchcock under a big spruce. It was brand new, from Nov. 2006 and we were second to sign in.

Hope this helps any future bushwhacks up there !

Glad you found it! I tried to pick a tree that would stay up, unlike the dozens of others that've blown down...somewhere under that mess is the old canister. If anybody finds it, they could transfer that register into the new tube.

Hehe I'm always afraid to mention any name. With all that snow we never found the other canister even though we spent, like Pierre, some time removing snow from downed trees nearby. Glad we found yours !
