The Bette Davis Hike (Bridal Veil Falls) 8/7/09

Thank you for the kind words. Touching a bit of history on a hike always adds a sweetness to the day for me. After reading Amicus's discussion on VFTT of the "Thoreau 16" (the 16 peaks in Mass., Maine, N.H., and N.Y. that Henry David Thoreau is known to have climbed), I wonder if, say, a...

The Bette Davis Hike (Bridal Veil Falls) 8/7/09

Trails: Tuckerbrook, Hardwood Heaven, Coppermine Miles: ~6 The story is well known. In 1939 the great film star Bette Davis, who enjoyed spending time in Sugar Hill, N.H., when she wasn't making movies, was out hiking by herself and managed to get lost on the way to Bridal Veil Falls. An...

Looking for a little "Boot Help"

Thank you, that's good to know. My older pair of all-leather Asolos can be resoled, and have been resoled, by any cobbler with Vibram soles on hand. My other pair, with soles molded on to the boot (as is the case with virtually all Asolos and so many other boots nowadays), would require the...

Looking for a little "Boot Help"

A pair of Limmer Lightweights runs about $275, the Midweights a bit more. A pair of Standards is around $325. The "commercial" (not custom) boots of all three models are made in Germany by a company the Limmer family has had a long relationship with, and I think the construction of these boots...

Looking for a little "Boot Help"

Ah. I was thinking those boots with molded soles are difficult to resole. If you're sticking with the Asolos (or a similar boot), it might be worth checking to see if a cobbler who is local to you has the necessary equipment. Not that you'll get your boots resoled every month, but it's nice to...

Looking for a little "Boot Help"

TEO, I haven't bought the insoles yet but will the next time I'm in an EMS store. Though I've had no real problems with my Limmers, I would like just a bit more arch support, I think (I have a high arch), which is why I called Carl for his recommendation after reading the insole threads on VFTT.

Looking for a little "Boot Help"

A happy Limmer wearer here, the Lightweight model for summer and the Standards for winter. Both feature one-piece leather construction, and the important thing about that is that there's no seam up the back of the boot. The heel keeps its shape and nicely cups the heel of your foot. The...

Thank goodness Rocket was there to calm things down when that guy started making disparaging remarks. C'mon people, this is Michael Bolton we're talking about. Mi.chael Bol.ton. I mean, who else would dare do an album of Sinatra covers? I've already swapped my new AMC 4000 patch for the CD...

2 August 2009: Nancy via Nancy Pond Tr., herdpath, North Conway memorial

Wow, what an adventure. Glad that everything turned out as well as could be expected, given the circumstances. (And how wonderful that Don was such a Good Samaritan.) Your comments about what you might have done if a rescue was needed are sobering. Until either the courts or the legislature pin...

That is one cool fire tower! Thanks for the photos, Rocket.

Thank you, all of you, for the kind congratulations and words. For anyone out there who is close to completing a list, I highly recommend bringing Rocket along. He's a superb List-Server. As for the "speed" with which we made the Bond Traverse, hah! Rocket was thinking 8 or 9 hours, I'm sure...

    Galehead, Garfield loop

Rocket and I totally saw you guys up on Garfield from the Bonds. In fact, Jeremy said, "Look up there, Loanshark and Liz!" Of course, he has better eyes than I do, being half my age and all. Great report, short and sweet!

    Bonding 8/1/09

With his usual unlimited kindness, Jeremy -- rocket21 -- offered to teach a member of his father's generation (me) what I really need to know to navigate the tricky, convoluted routes and byways of contemporary American culture. According to Rocket, if one is not conversant with the plot details...

Hey Mark, thank you for the green spot on the Owl's Head doggerel. And I liked your Tecumseh report! (That really is a nice trail, isn't it?) Amazing how much the water level in the creek near the trailhead changes from week to week. Back on the 19th it was easily rock-hoppable.

August 29 (Sat) -- NH48 Finish on Moosilauke

Tuckerman needs to meet Alex (and Trish and Sage). Tuckerman also needs to experience Moosilauke without the 60 mph wind and 10-degree temperature we had when we made the climb last Easter. Tuckerman believes the Moose is an icy, muzzle-freezing outpost that never has any people on its summit...
