    The Dangers of Mountain Running

In the excellent Shane McConkey documentary someone being interviewed says "If you keep pushing the boundaries, at some point you're going to find them." Unfortunately, for extreme athletes this can often mean the boundary they find is death. It is in humanity's nature to keep pushing the...

We had a moose walking through Brattleboro Vermont earlier this week.

    14 highest summits debate

There is so much nuance to all of these things and no two climbs can ever be identically equal. Therefore, the only solution in my opinion is to simply say specifically what you did: Did you summit with Oxygen? Say so Did you utilize the assistance of Sherpas? Say so Did you stop 10 feet below...

My letter to Baxter State Park>>>>

I have never seen that video before, oh my God. That state trooper deserves a medal for his patience. I can't believe that dude didn't get arrested, he would have deserved it.

My letter to Baxter State Park>>>>

Whenever I do encounter friendly staff at Baxter, I am reminded that: "This is what it could be!" I do not think it's unreasonable to expect staff at Baxter to have a welcoming demeanor instead of a cold, sour one. The unwelcoming State Trooper vibe you sometimes get there does a disservice to...

My letter to Baxter State Park>>>>

I have been a frequent hiking visitor to the park for quite a few years. I am writing with concerns regarding your staff. Some folks on your staff are ornery and seem like they do not want to be there. I have definitely encountered some staff whom are wonderful and friendly; however some of the...

    New Mount Monadnock Summit record>>>>

I have been 100% free from drugs and alcohol for 29 years now. If I hadn't stopped, I would have been dead long ago. One of the best decisions I ever made. It's funny - I never ever get tempted to drink or use drugs, not even a little bit. But I still crave cigarettes often. That addiction is so...

    New Mount Monadnock Summit record>>>>

I don't agree with y'all. Why does he need to live in moderation? I mean it's fine if someone wants to live in moderation, but why does he need to? He's happy. Isn't that what counts? Drugs are destructive and lead to physical, mental and emotional decay. This dude found climbing and running...

    April snowstorm

We have nearly a foot in Southern Vermont in the higher elevations. It's still coming down hard. Going to have to pull the snowshoes back out for climbing in certain places this weekend. I plan to XC ski after work; this is awesome I love the snow.

    Oldest Graffiti at Doublehead Cabin

Totally! It was a fun game scouring the cabin trying to find the oldest graffiti. 1930s at the Mountain Pond Shelter is super old. Wow! At the top of Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills there is some extremely old graffiti carved into the rock up there.

    Oldest Graffiti at Doublehead Cabin

My wife and I stayed at Doublehead Cabin. We found a great way to occupy ourselves once the hiking was over. We had a contest to see who could find the oldest graffiti in the nearly 90 year old building. We scoured every surface we could....1977, 1975, various 1960s..........and then we found...

    Redlining racist?

Anyone have any thoughts on my "Death March" comment from above - about how that terms carries extreme horribleness in its history but is used to describe an extremely long climb/hike? This conversation is like talking about abortion. It's not solvable to where a consensus is ever going to be...

    Redlining racist?

My personal general view towards these things is that it is more about intent than the word itself. What is the intent of the word or phrase being used? In my opinion, that is what matters most. However, I think, generally speaking, it's up to the group that could be hurt by it to make the...

Is there an uptick in using small sleds to descend?

Social media can be utilized by some people in a healthy beneficial way (i.e. sharing pictures of grandkids with distant relatives, an outlet for folks who have a handicap, sharing historical information, beautiful photography of the full moon, etc...) However, the vast, vast majority of all...

Is there an uptick in using small sleds to descend?

This winter I have seen a bunch of people in different areas using these small sleds; I think they're called Sonic Sleds from LL Bean. They sit down and then descend down the mountain on the snowshoe track on them. I have seen more people doing this this year than in all previous years combined...

    Tecumseh out, Guyot in?

There are soooo many peaks that should come off the ADK 46. That is the most artificially inflated list ever. Look at Emmons for example, not even close to 200’ of prominence. There are plenty of others too. South Hancock is ridiculous and should come off NH. Unless these lists want to say...

    Taconic Crest Trail

I did the Taconic Crest Trail a few years ago. Fantastic trail. It goes very quickly - I remember the footpath being quite smooth and well maintained and not as much roller coaster up and down as you might expect. I love the Taconics and this area in particular. I camped up on Berlin Mountain...
