    Climate Change in the Northeast

Reading suggestion Jared Diamond has penned a number of entertaining and educational books. I highly recommend his book Collapse, which looks at a number of civilizations and their success or failure based on various factors. Environmental collapse is a big problem for many now non-existent...

    Meteor Showers

The Great Show . . . won't be back for a number of years. The one we had 5 (more?) years ago was a peak on something like a 20 year cycle. I've looked for Leonids every year it's not cloudy, and seeing one seems like a pretty good show. But that one a few years back was unbelieveable. I ran...

    Two-way Radio Question

Some Users? Doug, I'll betcha that just about every user of the GMRS radio has no regard for which frequencies and be used at what power levels. And last I heard, the FCC has not made this its priority enforcement issue.

GPS coordinates for Zealand Falls Hut/Summit?

How did you do that? Nartreb, Did you just generate those waypoints on the fly somehow? Please share your secret (or, alternatively, since everybody may already understand it, edumacate me). Thanks,

    Isolation route question

All the Way on Davis Path Kevin, how long did that round trip take? It looks like you have a nice steep stretch on the way home around Mt. Stairs and Mt Resolution.

    Isolation route question

Another route to Isolation? Writing on his www.summitpost.org page for Isolation , Nartreb posits yet another route: The easiest approach from the West (crossing the ridge of the Southern Presidentials) is probably to take Crawford Path to the Mizpah Cutoff on Mt Pierce, then descend the Dry...

Bumper Crop of Mountain Ash Berries

Check out the Spruce cones too I'm sure the weather must have been just right for a number of plants. I am surprised by the number of cones on many of the trees up high. And is it related? I hadn't seen praying mantises for years and years, and now I've just seen a couple (one hopelessly out...

    Mushroom Field Guide Recommendations?

Another book idea I like the work of Orson Miller, who now has a Falcon guide (I don't know this one particularly, but I'm betting it's a dead ringer for his others), North American Mushrooms: A Field Guide to Edible and Inedible Fungi (Falconguide). Check the other thread on Glowing Mushrooms...

    Glowing Fungi or Mushrooms ?

#1 I bet is Marasmius oreades , especially if it was in a fairy ring (or arc). Compare #2 is harder--no shot of the underside, but just a hint on one edge. Looks like a bolete of some sort, perhaps Boletus bicolor ? Compare

    Glowing Fungi or Mushrooms ?

Those Deadly Amanitas Poor fellow in NY. There was a mass poisoning in Poland early last century. The school cook added Amanitas to the lunch, which, as one text described it, had to be the worst school lunch in all history. What is most awful about the toxins is they are slow acting. The...

    Glowing Fungi or Mushrooms ?

Guidebooks The one I grew up with is the predecessor to North American Mushrooms: A Field Guide to Edible and Inedible Fungi (Falconguide) by Orson Miller. Very technical (but not in an intrusive way), very descriptive, lots of pretty pictures

    Glowing Fungi or Mushrooms ?

The Foolproof Four Americans are pretty squeemish about eating wild mushrooms, and since we have never received basic training growing up (as we would have a few thousand years ago), it's probably a pretty good defense against dying from mushroom poisoning. My approach was first to learn the...

    Glowing Fungi or Mushrooms ?

Actually, the Armillaria species are supposed to be edible and quite tasty, though I'll admit I have avoided them for two reasons. Usually some critter, like a slug, has gotten there first. And you would not want to confuse the Armillaria with the Gallerina mushrooms found in the same habitat...

10 toughest trails in whites t shirt

I would nominate Watson Path, based on my view of it going down last Saturday. I'll admit, I have not seen the shirt.

Barefoot AT Hiker plods on to help vets

DUH on me! So much for reading comprehension, it's right there in the first sentence of the article. Now I am left wondering how many dogs have completed the trail (barefoot, that is).

Barefoot AT Hiker plods on to help vets

Ouch I can't imagine being barefoot on top of the Presidential Range. And he plans to hit the end of the trail just before Christmas? I wonder how the BSP rangers are going to feel about him climbing Kahtadin barefoot in the snow. That said, you have to admire his cause.

    Will this insect sting?

I wonder if you also have the experience that people think you are wierd? I never understood why all people don't pick up snakes and pet bumblebees.

    Will this insect sting?

Can Bumblebees Sting? Hmm, it seems there may be another opinion on whether bumblebees can sting. Who but bumblebee.org would be more qualified to answer this question? (And isn't that the question that keeps us up at night?) Anyway, here's what the bumblebee nuts say: They do sting! I would...

    Will this insect sting?

I vote for the leaf-footed bug We get these little guys in the house once in a while, and they are quite passive. I agree with gaiagirl on the ID (and she certainly posts the right credentials with that teaching assignment on bugs!). Here's a little more information on leptoglossus occidentalis

I Am the King of Putting My Foot in My Mouth

Foot in Mouth Specialist OK, it wasn't on the trail, but it was my best foot-in-mouth event so I can't resist telling it. We are at Town Meeting, very sparsely attended, and a zoning issue is up for discussion. The Finance Commission chairman gets up to speak against it. I lean over to my...
