Does a slowing economy change how much you Hike

I haven't been backpacking, but I have been going north for two day trips, and car camping overnight. Gas prices have dropped below my tipping point, but I'm not expecting to see $2.50 a gallon. Sorry Timmus & Neil :p

    Wet-weather bushwhacking gloves?

I don't know the model, but the basic EMS winter gloves with the glove liners work pretty well for me, even wet. The gloves come off for heavy exertion, and the liners protect against the shock of putting on cold wet gloves.

Coolest 4K Peak Name in Northeast

There are a few 'Tumble' variations around, like Tumbledick and Tumbledown Dick. I wish I knew the origin of the expression. Again, not a 4K.

Kilkenny Ridge Trail, Unknown Pond to Rogers Ledge

This trail is pleasantly wild. Lots of summer growth intruding on to the path. In the col between Unknown Pond Peak & Rogers Ledge, there is an island surrounded by water: Bog on the north, pond on the south. Approaching from the west, the puncheons are floating!  The water is...

Making a Mountain Feel Appreciated & Like One of the Guys (Square Mtn: 01-Sep-2008)

It's hip to be square The original jar had been placed on 5/4/00. The lid was rusted shut, but I had a full replacement kit. Will the little hill have to wait another 8 years, or will Square Mountain be 'in with the in crowd'?

    Benton Sugarloaf

I did it a couple years ago approaching from the Hogsback. It was pretty steep, but I used the very dense fir hoisting myself up & down. There were definitely human treadways on top, but the place may have gone wild. I got strafed by a small raptor. Maybe it was just playing ;)

Where would you build a trail in WMNF?

Vose Spur There is obvious wear heading up the slope. A designated trail laid out to minimize erosion would probably enhance the area.

    Define “Bushwhack”

Bushwhacking is a bit like art: I can't define it, but I know it when I am there; and it involves blood. If you aren't bleeding, the bushes didn't really whack you.

    Snowmobiling for Hikers

I'll drive 300 miles in a day to bag a peak so obscure that a lot of people on this board haven't heard of it, never mind the general population. The odds are greater of seeing a moose than seeing another person. I'll drive home exhausted to take a hot shower and sleep in a warm bed. This day...

MSR Plastic Snowshoes - any good?

I also own & recommend Denali Ascents. I tried the televator once and found I didn't like it. The shoes are noticeably loud and I can think of one additional drawback. Yesterday I left a tail behind in a spruce trap. I couldn't find it, but I was able to get down on one short shoe. I'll be...
