    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

Another question I just thought of: How far from the bunkhouse to the outhouse at these locations (Chimney, Roaring, Daicey)? Trying to figure out what I need to bring in terms of booties. The biggest challenge I have right now is the amount of food that I'm bringing in. I'm trying to keep my...

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

Very cool video, thanks for sharing. I am a cold sleeper, so I'm still trying to decide between the 2 bags... I've definitely slept in my -20* bag in the JBL before (but no wood stove, and this was back before we insulated the hell out of it and put new windows in, now all you need is a light...

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

I like this idea (similar to the one above). I custom sewed a big duffel bag out of an old tent fly for the pulk (rather than the tarp solution), so I should be able to just throw one of my other backpacks in there. Thanks for the feedback regarding the pot and sleeping bags. Will do, sorry...

So you mostly carried everything in your backpack with the exception of a few things in the pulk on the way in?

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

Hi Everyone, We're going with a large group to Baxter in the next few weeks (staying at Roaring Brook, Chimney Pond, and Daicy Pond). We have our pulks all constructed (and mildly tested), so far our biggest lesson learned is that weight in pulks are still weight and you can't go crazy bringing...

    Bigelows 12/29

Route: fire wardens trail +2 mile road walk. Trail broken by group of 3 ahead of us, we (5) caught them near the steep stuff. You're going to need snowshoes for this.

    Reddington 12/27, Saddleback 12/28

Reddington: Broke trail both ways. Snowshoes all day, CVR closed at paved road. Saddleback: Climbed via ski area, attained summit before being chased off ridge by 60mph winds (measured on hand held aneometer). Ski area staff very friendly, check in with ski patrol prior to climbing.

12/15/12 - Sawteeth, Gothics, Armstrong, UWJ

Conditions: treacherous! Route: Lake Road, Weld Trail, ST, Pyramid, Gothics, Range Trail, Arm, UWJ, Wedge Brook, East River, Lake Road. Equipment Required: Crampons, microspikes/light traction won't do. Crampons required most of the day, light traction used between 2000-3500' but really if...

How Do I Sharpen my Microspikes?

I was sharpening my spikes tonight. After getting frustrated with trying to hold the spikes, or putting each spike in my vice, I came up with this solution: Put a vice-grip into my bench vice, use the vice-grip on the individual spikes. It enabled me to make quick work of 2 sets of spikes. I too...

    No good deed goes un-punished

Breaking News Breaking News: A package arrived on 11/1/12, no return address, no note, and inside of it was... THE HEADLAMP! Faith in humanity restored (maybe I'm a little disappointed in myself for being so impatient) :)

    Adk jbl

JBL is at 2200 ish whereas the summits are at 4200 ish The Google maps terrain layer is good enough for most of this sort of rudimentary trip planning: http://goo.gl/maps/84oMS

    No good deed goes un-punished

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm not so much bummed about the loss of the headlamp (if I had dropped it, no big deal, though it did have a bit of nostalgia attached to it), but rather, the fact that they didn't take the effort to get it back to me. Quiet you! It was (one of) my nicest...

    No good deed goes un-punished

Back in late August (8/26/12) we were on Jackson for the last mountain in our pressie traverse when we met 2 ladies with a dog at the summit. They were novice hikers (their gear indicated a general lack of hiking experience) but they were in good spirits and very nice (nice enough to take our...

    Kudos to Osprey and Gregory

Nice choice, I had the variant 37 (which seems to fit a lot more stuff than my Atmos 50) and decided to add a variant 52 if I ever decide to do (light) winter overnights (I might have a bit of pack addiction).

    4 Season List (Gridiot) Question

Thanks for the reply (I tried to click the "thanks" button, and then realized I was on the wrong forum). I'll probably stick with the "Random Season" rule (or the table I have above) for the 46 hikes, and since I have next to zero intention of a 4x115, I don't really have to worry about the AMC...

    4 Season List (Gridiot) Question

Thanks for the fix! If I follow the ADK rules, I'd call the seasons this: Winter 12/21 - 3/21 (Per their rules) Spring 3/22 - 6/21 (made up by me) Summer 6/22 - 9/21 (made up by me) Fall 9/22 - 12/20 (made up by me) That would put my hike comfortably into Fall. The majority of voters have...
